Birkirara cruise past Lija

Times of Malta

With two goals in each half, Birkirkara defeated Lija Athletic 4-1 to confirm their recent fine form as they extend their unbeaten run to eleven matches. Birkirkara move back in fourth place on level points with Sliema Wanderers, three behind third-placed Gżira United. Right from the start, Birkirkara were clearly a better side in a match which however provided few shots at goal apart from the actual goals. Lija, on the other hand, were unable to repeat the same performance as their last game against Floriana. Читать дальше...

Libel vs freedom of the press: the very first court case

Times of Malta

When Great Britain took over Malta in 1813, it inherited a country in which censorship was the rule, and the rule had no exceptions. The Order of Malta was generally a benign but wholly autocratic sovereign which exercised total control over anything the people were authorised to know and repeat. The ruler only allowed the public to know what the state believed it should be allowed to. Within Malta, the Order achieved this by licensing only one printing press, and permitting this to print solely what the Grand Master... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

Progressive US senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren called on Sunday for action against what they said were the Wall Street abuses by hedge funds revealed by the recent frenzy over GameStop shares. "We need an SEC investigation," Warren told CNN, referring to the federal Securities and Exchange Commission. "What's happening with GameStop is just a reminder of what's been going on on Wall Street now for years," the Democratic senator said.  "It's a rigged game, and it's been a set of players... 'People with disability deserve work too': new commissioner lays out goals

Times of Malta

Walking around her new office just a few days after her appointment, Commissioner for Disability Samantha Pace Gasan is determined to send a clear message to society: people with disability deserve to work too. The 27-year-old was appointed commissioner earlier this month, taking over from Oliver Scicluna who is now an MP. As a person with a disability herself – she lost sight in one eye last year after a stroke following heart surgery – Pace Gasan is now even more vocal about the need for people like her to be part of the workforce. Israel says it will send 5,000 vaccine shots to Palestinians

Times of Malta

Israel said Sunday it would send 5,000 coronavirus vaccine shots to the Palestinian Authority to inoculate medical personnel, following global pressure to ensure Palestinians are vaccinated. Israeli authorities have launched an aggressive campaign to vaccinate its own citizens, but the shots have not been made available to Palestinians in the West Bank, occupied by Israel since the 1967 Six Day War.  In recent weeks, the United Nations and rights groups have piled pressure on Israel to help some... Brilliant Bamford helps Leeds sink Leicester

Times of Malta

Leeds forward Patrick Bamford got back on track as his superb goal inspired a 3-1 win that ended Leicester’s seven-match unbeaten run in the Premier League on Sunday. After scoring six goals in his first six Premier League games for Leeds, Bamford had endured a barren spell that raised questions about his suitability for the central striker’s role. The 27-year-old answered the critics in style at the King Power Stadium when he fired into the top corner for just his second goal in seven games. Continue reading this article on Sports Desk.

Farmers living in fear of eviction after landmark judgement

Times of Malta

Two of Malta’s leading agricultural NGOs say they are receiving an increasing number of reports from distressed farmers worried they could be kicked off their land, following a landmark court judgment last November. The two NGOs sounded the alarm after the Constitutional Court ruled that the Agricultural Leases Act, which grants tenants an indefinite right of renewal, breached a landlord’s fundamental rights. That judgment was the first to back owners of agricultural land – often worth millions but leased at a paltry rent ... Читать дальше...

French President Emmanuel Macron has gambled by not imposing a third national lockdown to contain Covid-19 -- against expectations and the advice of his most senior scientific advisers. The 43-year-old leader opted to tighten existing restrictions on travel and shopping at a cabinet meeting on Friday after a week in which his government appeared to be preparing the public for new stay-at-home orders. The move keeps France on a different path to its biggest neighbours Britain and Germany at a time... Читать дальше...

Treating shoulder injuries

Times of Malta

Shoulder injuries are common. In young patients, they are usually a result of sports injuries while in older patients, they follow a trip or fall. Shoulder injuries may also be the result of a repetitive strain injury. They vary in severity from an acute sprain or tendonitis – which resolves in a few days with rest, anti-inflammatories and gentle exercise – to a dislocation or severe fracture which may require an operative fixation or, sometimes, a shoulder replacement in elder patients. The shoulder... Читать дальше...

Malta should welcome, not oppose EU's minimum wage plans - Graffitti

Times of Malta

Malta’s decision to oppose plans to introduce an obligatory EU-wide adequate minimum wage has been met with concern by activist group Moviment Graffitti.  The NGO said the government’s opposition to the European Commission’s plan was “alarming”, given that the local minimum wage was already “strikingly low”.  Malta said on Friday that it had joined eight other EU member states in writing to the European Commission to urge it to downgrade its plans to introduce a minimum wage directive, making that a recommendation instead. Fomm ir-Riħ landowner is developer lobby chief Sandro Chetcuti

Times of Malta

A gate blocking access to the idyllic Fomm ir-Riħ bay was placed there by developers' lobby president Sandro Chetcuti, who owns the massive tract of land behind it leading to the sea.  The gate was removed last Friday following a public outcry, but the Environment Ministry has indicated that the removal is only temporary and that it will return once the landowner obtains a permit for it.  Malta Today reported on Sunday that the land in question is owned by Malta Developers' President Sandro Chetcuti. The most bizarre tale of all (1)

Times of Malta

Terence sits quite calmly in his chair, not even noticing the ash that falls silently to the floor from his cigarette. To look at him, you would think that he is talking about something he saw on television. There is no sign of agitation, no hint of fear, no manic glint in his eyes. But Terence is no ordinary person. As he recounted his tales, one after the other in a relentless stream of incredible phenomena, I could feel a tingle of fear run along my spine. I wriggled in my seat, afraid of the power he could wield. Читать дальше...

Look at what is happening elsewhere. In Sicily, Libya, Spain, France, Germany…look around you and you will see how well we are living. Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

Residents of a street once surrounded by fields in Swieqi are still battling a 30-year-old flooding problem, claiming works being done have not prevented the road from turning into a river every time it rains. Garages and basements in Triq it-Tiben are constantly flooded but residents say their appeals for Infrastructure Malta to install water culverts have been unheeded. One resident, Anna Grima, said they have been begging to have the problem solved for 30 years, as the once-rural area developed around them. Читать дальше...

Reports of torturing detained migrants – Manuel Delia

Times of Malta

The European Asylum Support Office headquartered in Valletta has received several reports from migrants detained at the Lyster and Safi barracks of physical torture, beatings, solitary confinement, denial or delay of medical care and, in some cases, electrocution. The EASO says it has “discussed” these reports with the Maltese authorities but the ministry responsible denies ever receiving reports of physical ill-treatment of detainees.
