2020: the year in murders, all of them solved by police

The police have managed to solve all murders committed in 2020, in a year where for the first time a father was charged with killing his son.  It is the second successive year where the police recorded a 100 per cent success rate, and the first time this has occurred since 2004, according to crime historian Eddie Attard. Six cases were solved last year and three in 2019 – in other words, the police mounted prosecutions in all the murders that took place, although they are all still pending a court judgment. EU ready to help expand vaccine production, ease 'bottleneck'

The European Union is ready to help drug companies expand coronavirus vaccine production to clear a "bottleneck" in distribution, its top health official said Saturday. Health commissioner Stella Kyriakides told German news agency DPA that any delay in getting approved vaccines out was down to production capacity shortage, not EU planning. 96 migrants rescued in Maltese SAR zone, requesting safe harbour

Updated 5.30pm with port request A boat with 97 migrants on board was rescued by a private vessel in Malta's search and rescue zone on Saturday after Maltese authorities ignored a request for assistance, according to the NGO Alarm Phone. The Open Arms rescue vessel is now requesting to disembark the migrants, among them 17 minors and two women, in Malta, a spokesperson told Times of Malta. Hundreds booked for Covid violations as mass French NYE rave ends

Hundreds of revellers were booked for breaking coronavirus restrictions as an illegal rave in northwestern France ended on Saturday after more than two days of partying that saw clashes with police. A new sport is set to roll across the island in the new year. Malta’s first roller derby league is gearing up to make its debut in the coming days. Traditionally consisting of all-female teams, the sport is sometimes described as rugby on roller skates. The derby is played on an oblong rink in which two teams attempt to score points by skating counter-clockwise and out-lapping each other. A team consists of a ‘jammer’ and four ‘blockers’. 71-year old dies in hospital after December construction accident

A 71-year old man died in hospital on Saturday after an accident on a construction site in Iklin last month.  The man, who lived in Mosta, was injured in a fall while working on an apartment block in Triq il-Wied, Iklin, on December 1. He was taken to Mater Dei Hospital, where police said he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.

Israel administers one million COVID vaccines in 10 days to lead global race

Israel has vaccinated more than one million people against COVID-19 in just over 10 days, in what experts believe is the world’s fastest ever vaccine drive. More than one million Israelis have received an initial shot of a COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Pfizer/BioNTech, including all medical staff and one in every four people aged over 60. Eight babies born on New Year's Day

Just two minutes into the new year, a baby girl popped into the world becoming Malta’s first newborn of 2021.  The girl was one out of eight babies born on New Year’s Day, said Mater Dei CEO Celia Falzon. Police seek public's help to locate missing man

A man reported missing on December 31 remains missing three days later, with the police issuing an update on Saturday to reiterate calls for the public to help them locate him. Marcel Pisani was last seen at his house in Mosta on Thursday and has not been spotted since. Pisani uses a wheelchair and drives a light blue Renault Captur with a cream roof. Paceville New Year's Eve violence: 'I was covered in blood'

A young woman hoping for some New Year’s Eve fun was knocked unconscious when a bottle flew across a restaurant into her head during a violent brawl that broke out among dozens of diners.
