Tunisia arrests over 600, deploys troops after riots

Tunisian authorities have arrested more than 600 people and deployed troops after a third consecutive night of riots, mostly by young people in working-class districts of several cities. The unrest came despite a nationwide coronavirus pandemic lockdown declared last Thursday - the day that also marked 10 years since demonstrators forced dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's fall from power. Doctors see fewer cases of influenza, common cold

Doctors have been treating fewer patients with common colds and seasonal influenza this year with experts crediting mitigation measures to keep COVID-19 at bay as having an impact on people’s overall health. Two out of every five COVID patients who needed a ventilator died

Some 40 per cent of COVID-19 patients who were admitted into the intensive therapy unit at Mater Dei Hospital and placed on a ventilator died last year.  The numbers were tabled in parliament on Monday by Health Minister Chris Fearne in response to a question asked by independent MP Godfrey Farrugia.  A total of 99 people were admitted to the ITU in 2020, 40 of whom died, according to the figures.  The largest amount of people who were admitted to the ITU and placed on a ventilator was registered in October... FBI says Capitol rioter allegedly hoped to sell Pelosi laptop to Russia

A young woman identified as having taken part in the storming of the US Capitol reportedly stole a laptop belonging to top Democrat Nancy Pelosi and hoped to sell it to a Russian spy agency, according to an FBI criminal complaint. The complaint, filed in the US District Court in Washington, seeks the arrest of Riley June Williams of Pennsylvania on grounds including "violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds." Digging works for Balluta ferry 'breached environmental permit'

The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) has fined the contractor digging two trenches into the concrete quay at Balluta, St Julian’s, because a silt curtain was not used. A spokesman for the regulator said the infringement, found following an investigation, breached conditions in the environment permit it had issued. Balluta ferry objectors file constitutional case claiming breach of rights

Objectors to the approved ferry service at Balluta Bay, St Julian’s, have filed a constitutional case challenging the impartiality and independence of the appeals tribunal that is hearing the case.  They argued that the tribunal was chaired by a Planning Authority employee, raising doubt over the right to be judged by an impartial tribunal.  Moviment Graffitti and independent candidate Arnold Cassola are among the objectors to a new hop-on-hop-off ferry service at Balluta Bay, which they insist would ruin a top bathing zone in the area. €3 million in traffic fines to be invested in community projects

Some €3 million, collected by LESA through traffic fines, will be invested by local councils in community projects. Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is being denied access to legal representation, his lawyer said Monday, after the Kremlin critic was detained at a Moscow airport on arrival from Germany.
