No Mediterranean diet please... we’re Maltese

Despite living on an island bang in the heart of the region, most Maltese do not follow the Mediterranean diet, according to people who work in the industry. Government-appointed committee to raise awareness of parental alienation

The government has set up a 'technical committee' to raise awareness about  ‘parental alienation’. MFSA appoints new competent person to oversee Pilatus Bank

The MFSA has appointed auditor Robert Ancilleri as the competent person at law to oversee the affairs of Pilatus Bank following the resignation of the incumbent Lawrence Connell. Connell, a  former US financial regulator, had been appointed in March 2018 but resigned with immediate effect on Wednesday. No reason was given by the MFSA. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte's government was plunged into crisis Wednesday after two cabinet ministers from a junior partner quit, taking the ruling coalition to the brink of collapse. A former Labour general election candidate said on Wednesday he was glad to no longer form part of the Labour Party, after failing to make it to parliament through a casual election. Woman wins damages from men who secretly filmed her having sex as a minor

A woman who was secretly filmed having sex when she was still a minor has won over €32,000 in damages, in a civil suit judgement 14 years after the traumatic incident.   The woman had been underage at the time and in a relationship with one of the five men against whom she filed the civil suit, seeking damages for the psychological trauma the incident caused her.  She was secretly filmed while having sex with her then-boyfriend and the compromising footage was subsequently copied onto CDs which were put into circulation via a DVD store. Disability commissioner Oliver Scicluna expected to become an MP

Oliver Scicluna, chairman of the Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability, is expected to be co-opted to parliament, filling the seat vacated by the surprise resignation of newly re-elected MP Gavin Gulia on Wednesday.  Sources told Times of Malta that Scicluna had been hand-picked by Prime Minister Robert Abela for the post, beating other potential candidates such as Żebbuġ mayor Malcolm Galea. It will be Scicluna’s first foray into party politics, after several years of work within the disability sector. Woman injured in double collision

A 55-year-old woman was injured on Wednesday when her car was involved in a double collision in Tarxien. The police said the woman, a resident of Gudja, was driving a Renault Captur that was involved in a collision in Triq Is-Sorijiet, Tarxien, with a BMW320D driven by a 26-year-old man from Tarxien. The Captur subsequently crashed into a parked Ford Connect. Police investigations are continuing.

Court grants bail for fisherman arrested in drugs raid

A fisherman who was arrested in October when 20kg of cannabis were found on a fishing boat in Marsaxlokk, was granted bail on Wednesday.  Wayne Schembri, 28, was arraigned alongside two other suspects, 38-year old Glen Montesin and 19-year old Zach Woodhead. Internet slows for Melita customers as company faces cyberattack

Internet services slowed for Melita customers on Wednesday afternoon as the telecommunications provider faced a cyberattack.    Customers reported being intermittently unable to load websites or send messages using online services starting from just after 12.30pm.  In a statement, the company said that it was suffering a DDOS attack by "cybercriminals aiming to extort money".  A DDOS attack, or distributed denial-of-service attack is a commonly-used method by cybercriminals to overwhelm a website with too much traffic, forcing it to crash. Death registry change after grieving father had to label his child a 'spinster'

Girls will no longer have to be referred to as spinsters on their death certificates after a grieving father recounted how he was unable to describe his dead daughter as a child.
