A proposed four-storey block of apartments at the edge of a protected zone in Naxxar would continue to turn the area into a ‘favela’ and overshadow a heritage gem, residents have charged. They are calling on the Planning Authority to reject the application for two apartments and a duplex penthouse with pool to be built on top of a garage opposite an 18th-century villa located in an urban conservation area. More than 350 migrants have been rescued off the Libyan coast by the Ocean Viking humanitarian vessel in just two days, a European NGO running the boat said on Saturday. SOS Mediterranee said that "106 people were rescued... in international waters 28 nautical miles (50 kilometres) from the Libyan coast" on Friday evening. A 19th-century sea shanty has landed a spot in the UK top 40 as the traditional sailor songs are enjoying a new wave of popularity thanks to the popular short video app TikTok. The song "Wellerman" performed by The Longest Johns, a band from Bristol in western England, is now at No. 37, in the Official Chart, which takes into account streaming of music. The iconic talk show host Larry King, one of the most recognisable figures on US television as he quizzed everyone who was anyone over a career spanning 60 years, died on Saturday at the age of 87. The company he co-founded, Ora Media, did not state a cause of death but media reports said King had been battling COVID-19 for weeks and had suffered several health problems in recent years. A teenage construction worker was grievously hurt on Saturday morning when he fell off a ladder at a worksite in Ħal Farruġ, the police said.  The teenager, who is 17 years old and from Syria, fell from the ladder at around 9am while working.  A medical team was called to the site and administered first-aid before rushing him to Mater Dei Hospital for further treatment.  The police have opened an investigation into the incident.

Authorities announced 119 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, the lowest daily case count since January 3. The new cases were however detected from just 2,571 swab tests, which is also a three-week low. Those figures meant the positivity rate stood at 4.6 per cent, in line with the average reported in recent weeks.  The positivity rate is a measure of the proportion of tests that are positive and is used as an indicator of how widespread infection is.  Deaths reach 250  A further two patients died, taking Malta’s COVID-19 death toll to 250. The number of crimes committed in 2020 went down by a whopping 16 per cent, official figures published Saturday showed, as the impact of the pandemic seems to have left its mark on criminality.  There were 25.4 crimes for every 1,000 people in 2020, down from 42 crimes per 1,000 in 2015, the government's annual crime statistics report showed.   But while the government welcomed the figure, saying the crime rate has now been on a downward trend for the past four years, it also acknowledged 2020 was... Technology developed by scientists to deploy telescopes to the dark side of the moon could be used to monitor breathing patterns of COVID patients or babies at risk of cot death.
