'Obscene' prison notice is an attack on criminal justice system - Bernard Grech

Times of Malta

A notice in Malta's prison telling staff that their job is to "teach fear" is obscene and an attack on work done by the police, lawyers and court system to bring criminals to justice, Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech said on Saturday. Grech said he would remove colonel Alexander Dalli, who heads Corradino Correctional Facility, if he were to be prime minister.  Speaking during a radio interview held on Radio 103 hosted by Andrew Azzopardi, Grech said the CCF notice was proof of abuse within Malta's prison system. The updated Citroen C3 is a car for those prioritising comfort

Times of Malta

What is it? The supermini class is as popular and busy as they come, with models like the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Polo all dominating. But there are other names you should consider in this class – not least the Citroen C3. This funky model has been around in its current form since 2016, and has clocked up nearly 800,000 sales in that time, but despite that success it remains a car many forget about in this class. Plans to turn Żebbuġ palazzo into 50-bed hotel alarm cultural watchdog

The Superintendence of Cultural Heritage has strongly opposed the conversion of an 18th-century palazzo in Żebbuġ into a 50-bed hotel, recommending instead that the building and its gardens be given the highest level of protection. They recognised the palazzo’s historical value and that of... Читать дальше...

Taxes and food certificates: UK counts Brexit costs

Times of Malta

A tangle of post-Brexit paperwork, duties and taxes is disrupting commercial ties between Britain and the European Union that have often taken years to build, piling extra costs on small firms that can make cross-Channel trade unprofitable. Changes since the UK's departure from the bloc's single market and customs union on January 1 have made it "commercially and practically impossible for us to continue actually shipping to the EU", laments cheesemaker Simon Spurrell. Owner of the Hartington Creamery... Читать дальше...

How experts are training former COVID patients to regain their sense of smell

Times of Malta

The link between COVID and smell and taste disturbance became apparent in March 2020 as the pandemic swept around the globe. To date, nearly 100 million people have been infected with coronavirus. Around 60% will have experienced smell and taste disturbance – with 10% having persistent symptoms. This means that about 6 million people – and rising – have this symptom. So what can be done about it? Smell loss has traditionally received little attention in the field of medicine and so there has been a lack of clinical trials for treatments. Читать дальше...

Road ahead for enforcement agency

Times of Malta

A report by the National Audit Office has lifted the lid on why the Local Enforcement System Agency has failed, much like the local wardens before it. It may also explain the lack of discipline on the roads and why irresponsible motorists appear to enjoy immunity. In a nutshell, the agency does not have enough money to be run as it should, it is unable to hire the sort of personnel it really needs to function. Some of its present staff members are illiterate and lack appropriate skills, giving the agency a bad name... Читать дальше...

GameStop: hedge fund attacks have opened up a new front against Wall Street

Times of Malta

In the dying days of 2009, Rage Against the Machine achieved the unlikeliest of Christmas number ones with a re-release of their anti-establishment anthem Killing in the Name. This was driven by an online campaign to give a great festive bloody nose to Simon Cowell, whose latest X-Factor winner was denied their routine annual spot at the top of the charts. That protest against a creatively bankrupt mainstream pop media became a case study in the power of an online crowd with a strong narrative. It finds echoes today in a very different arena...
