Economics faculty revises decision to fail 250 students

Times of Malta

A decision to fail more than 250 first-year commerce students at the University of Malta because of cheating has been revised by a new disciplinary board. Students found to be directly involved in the suspected cheating have been reprimanded and had marks from the affected test "deducted according to the degree of severity of their collusion".  All other students have been given the original mark they obtained in the test.  Earlier this month, the Faculty of Economics informed students that they... Massage therapist in fear as sexual requests soar

Times of Malta

A massage therapist fears for the safety of herself and her colleagues as sexual requests quadrupled in the first months of the pandemic. Rebecca, who has been working as a self-employed professional therapist since 2016, told Times of Malta it had, sadly, become normal to receive an average of one message a week asking for sexual services. However, she added, between March and May last year that number went up to four weekly. While she speculated that the increase had to do with restrictions limiting social interaction and... Times of Malta

At least 12 gold miners trapped hundreds of metres underground in China for more than a week have sent up a note warning some are injured, water surrounds them and they urgently need medicine. Twenty-two workers became trapped more than 600 metres from the mine's entrance after a blast eight days ago at the mine near Qixia city in eastern Shandong province. After days without any signs of life, rescuers heard knocking sounds on Sunday afternoon as they drilled through the mine's shaft. A note was... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

Female and religious university students are more inclined to fear COVID-19, according to new research, which confirmed increased use of alcohol, heightened depression and loneliness among students as they weather the pandemic. Analysing students who used substances before COVID-19, almost 40 per cent reported increased use of cigarettes, 29.9 per cent reported increased use of alcohol, and 46.9 per cent reported increased cannabis use – all as a result of their fear of coronavirus. The data was collected last year from 777 online surveys... Читать дальше...

Why some business organisations fail

Times of Malta

Business process re-engineering was arguably the most debated management concept in the 1990s thanks to the seminal work of respected authors like Thomas Davenport. This was when information and communications technology, trade liberalisation and deregulation were shaking the foundations of many established industries like banking, aviation and retail. Various management strategy blueprints were proposed to help business organisations reinvent themselves to remain relevant. Total quality management... Читать дальше...

Should I buy bitcoins?

Times of Malta

Like many, I have watched wide-eyed as Bitcoin values have soared – another of the peculiar outcomes of the COVID-19 pandemic. Naturally, this has attracted many to start seeing so-called ‘cryptocurrencies’ as an investment that will generate outstanding returns in a generally low return environment. Some major financial institutions, never ones to miss out on any fad, have started offering cryptocurrencies as part of investment portfolios. Yet, before diving in, it might be as well to understand what these offerings are and what they are not. Читать дальше...

Everything you need to know about the new Volkswagen Golf GTI

Times of Malta

The word icon gets thrown around a lot, but in the case of the Volkswagen Golf GTI, that’s exactly what it is. The first model began development in 1974 as a secret project for six VW staff members. News permitted to be partisan

Times of Malta

A long-standing legal provision that, at least prima facie, appears to be in direct contrast with the spirit of the constitution, is finally destined to be settled by the court. The constitution demands that the Broadcasting Authority ensures “due impartiality” with regard to matters of political or industrial controversy or those relating to current public policy. It also lays down that this function “shall be without prejudice to such other functions and duties as may be conferred upon it by any law for the time being in force in Malta”. Читать дальше...

Dacia Sandero takes the crown as 2021 WhatCar? Car of the Year

Times of Malta

The Dacia Sandero has fended off fierce competition to become the WhatCar? Car of the Year. The crown was awarded to the Sandero 1.0 TCe 90 Comfort in particular. What Car? editor Steve Huntingford said: “The Sandero’s price is scarcely believable when you consider that our expert testing has shown it to be the equal of or better than most of its higher-priced rivals. In the eyes of our test team it stood out for being delightfully comfortable, incredibly spacious and for its suite of modern safety aids and technology. Читать дальше...
