Woman gets final flowers from father who died five years ago

Times of Malta

An American woman's 21st birthday this year is tinged with sadness - it will be the last time she will receive a card and bouquet of flowers from her dead father. Just before he lost his battle with cancer at 56, Michael William Sellers arranged to have flowers delivered to his 16-year-old daughter every year on her birthday, just to let her know he was thinking of her and loved her. He prepaid to have the floral arrangement sent for five years. In a heartbreaking post on Twitter, Bailey, from Tennessee... Читать дальше...

Trump, Time Magazine clash on 'Person of the Year'

Times of Malta

Time magazine has disputed Donald Trump's account of how he rejected a request for an interview and photo session ahead of its "Person of the Year" issue. In a tweet as he spent the Thanksgiving holiday in Florida, the president sounded dismissive of the honour he received last year and could receive again. He tweeted: "Time Magazine called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named 'Man (Person) of the Year,' like last year, but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. "I said probably is no good and took a pass. Читать дальше...

Balzan go top after narrow win

Times of Malta

Balzan 1; Senglea 0 Bojan Kaljevic was the hero for Balzan as they registered a narrow win over Senglea Athletic to move temporarily on top the BOV Premier League table before Valletta's big clash with rivals Floriana on Sunday. As expected, Balzan held the upper-hand, right from the start, going close on various occasions but Senglea goalkeeper Giulio Cetrangolo performed a number of good saves. However one minute in added time, Balzan managed to break the deadlock when off a cross by Cadu from the right... Читать дальше...

Updated: Manchester pair in the clear as main rivals all draw

Times of Malta

Manchester United saw off a determined Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 on Saturday to reduce Manchester City's lead at the top of the Premier League to five points, while the three teams below them all dropped points. Liverpool and Chelsea drew 1-1 at Anfield while Tottenham Hotspur's pursuit stalled with a home draw against West Bromwich Albion. Those results offered an opportunity to Arsenal and surprise packets Burnley, either of whom would move into fourth if they win Sunday's meeting at Turf Moor. Читать дальше...

Derby delight for tenacious Naxxar Lions

Times of Malta

Naxxar 2; Mosta 0 Naxxar scored two second-half goals to send arch-rivals Mosta reeling. Naxxar’s Bastos was agonisingly close with a scissor-kick and Messias was denied by Vella after the hour mark when somehow Mosta held out early in the second half. However, as the game proceeded, the more emphatic became Naxxar’s edge. When Naxxar broke their opponents after 65 minutes, the Lions appeared to be coasting home if their lead was slender. The goal came after an intelligent piece of work by defender... Читать дальше...

It will now allow Moscow to force foreign media to brand news they provide to Russians as the work of "foreign agents" and to disclose their funding sources. A copy of the law was published... SLIEMA WANDERERS 2; GŻIRA UNITED 1 Sliema came from behind to turn tables on their rivals Gzira United. Merkel points to grand coalition with Social Democrats

Times of Malta

Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday welcomed the prospect of talks on a "grand coalition" with her Social Democrat (SPD) rivals and defended the record of the previous such government, saying it had worked well. Merkel's fourth term was cast into doubt when the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) walked out of three-way coalition talks with her conservative bloc and the Greens last Sunday, causing a political impasse in Europe's biggest economy. But on Friday, the SPD reversed a previous decision and agreed to talk to Merkel... Читать дальше...

Stop any 'commercial development' on Manoel Island

Times of Malta

Despite significant improvements to the Manoel Island masterplan, there should not be any commercial development in this valuable and important place, Moviment Graffitti said. "Manoel Island should serve as a stark reminder of how senseless it is to give away public land for private interests," the pressure group said about the area given to MIDI through a bi-partisan agreement in parliament several years ago. But Graffitti also noted significant improvements over the masterplan presented earlier this year... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

Lewis Hamilton was beaten to pole position by his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas for Sunday's final race of the year in Abu Dhabi. World champion Hamilton, who had appeared in ominous form for much of the weekend, was on course to steal pole in the closing moments only for a scruffy end to his last lap which included him running wide at the final corner. Bottas finished the best part of two tenths of a second ahead of Hamilton under the floodlights of the Yas Marina circuit to secure his second pole in as many grands prix... Читать дальше...

No group has claimed responsibility, but Egyptian forces are battling a stubborn IS affiliate in the region, one of the surviving branches of the militant group after it suffered defeats by U.S.-backed forces in Iraq and Syria. The assault on a mosque has stunned Egyptians... Читать дальше...

Proposal for investment of salary top-ups in bonds for retirement floated

Times of Malta

A proposal to ‘invest’ part of salary increases into government bonds which would mature after retirement was yesterday floated by Employment Minister Evarist Bartolo as a possible solution to address pension sustainability. The idea was put forward during a debate held as part of a two-day seminar organised by the UĦM Voice of the Workers on the EU pillar of social rights. Mr Bartolo noted that in 20 years’ time, the entire system might collapse, as there would be only two workers sustaining each pensioner, which was half the present number. Читать дальше...

A renewal was agreed between player and club in July but it is only now that Messi has put pen to paper on the contract. Announcing the deal, the LaLiga club added that the Argentina forward has had a £626million buy-out clause inserted into his contract. That means, in all likelihood, the 30-year-old will finish his career at the Nou Camp and not, as has been reported for some time, move to Manchester City. Messi, who... Читать дальше...
