President Donald Trump, who has raised eyebrows by mulling his power to pardon as investigators probe possible ties between his 2016 election campaign and Russia, used his authority in a less controversial way on Tuesday to "pardon" a Thanksgiving turkey. Time running out for missing Argentine submarine

Authorities were investigating white flares spotted in the South Atlantic overnight, as urgency grew on Tuesday in the search for a missing Argentine navy submarine amid worry that its 44 crew members could be running out of oxygen. Searchers found an empty raft floating in the ocean, and noticed white flares from a distance. But the raft's brand suggested it did not belong to the ARA San Juan. President visits Maltese patients in London hospitals

President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca visited Maltese patients in five London hospitals today, in an annual visit she makes in the run-up to Christmas. She visited Guy’s Hospital, Avelina Hospital, St Thomas Hospital, St Bart’s Hospital, and Charing Cross Hospital, where she also met management officials, medical staff and Maltese who work there. She thanked all involved for the care shown to Maltese patients. She also presented donations for cancer research.

Serie A1 side set for Malta training camp

Serie A1 side, Orlandina Basket will be returning to Malta for a three-day training camp between Friday and Sunday at the Ta’ Qali Pavilion. This is the second time that the Italian side have chosen Malta to conduct a short camp after last year they had also conducted a similar training spin here. “The Italian National League will stop for an international break next week to let players join their respective national teams for their upcoming commitments,” club spokesman Pietro Scibetta said in a statement. A court-appointed expert said today that he had concluded that excessive speed was one of the factors which had caused a Porsche 918 Spyder supercar to skid out of control, slamming into a crowd of onlookers and injuring 23 at the 2015 annual Paqpaqli ghall-Istrina car show. Mechanical expert Mr Zammit also admitted that he had never previously examined a Spyder supercar and he was not aware that the supercar stored electronic data which could be retrieved. Parents still fear sport activities are ‘dangerous’

Despite efforts to persuade parents not to discourage children from taking physical education lessons, little progress has been achieved over the last seven years amid fears that practising certain sports might be dangerous. This conclusion emerged from a report carried by the National Audit Office, which analysed the level of implementation of a series of recommendations it made in 2010. The MSE Equity Price Index erased yesterday’s gains of 0.04% as it slipped by 0.14% to 4,471.731 points today. US charges two with bribing African officials for China energy firm

The United States has charged a former Senegalese foreign minister and a former top Hong Kong government official with links to a Chinese energy conglomerate with bribing high-level officials in Chad and Uganda in exchange for contracts for the mainland company. Two hurt in Marsa crash

A man and a woman were injured this morning in a collision between two cars at Council of Europe Street, Marsa. The police said the crash, at 11am, involved a Toyota Corolla driven by a 62-year-old woman from Luqa and a BMW X5 driven by a 56-year-old man from Msida. Two passengers in the BMW were injured, a 31-year-old man from Rabat who suffered serious injuries, and a 25-year-old woman from Msida who was slightly injured.

In a heist reminiscent of a Hollywood movie, Kenyan robbers spent months tunnelling into the bowels of a bank located opposite a police station and stole the equivalent of half a million dollars, police said on Tuesday. Police said they had arrested two men and one woman over the robbery but had not recovered the 50 million Kenyan shillings, reported missing by staff at the branch of Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) on Monday when they showed up to work. Man accused of defiling five boys

A man who allegedly defiled five underage boys was remanded in custody after he was arraigned before a magistrate today.  The 47-year old from Żebbuġ, was charged with the defilement of five minors, with having engaged in sexual activity with them and with having forced them to participate in sexual acts. The man was also charged with with coercing a 13-year-old boy to take part in a pornographic show and with having produced or facilitated the circulation of indecent material. German police recover 100 stolen John Lennon items

A cigarette case, a handwritten musical score, three diaries and two pairs of signature metal-rimmed glasses were among stolen goods belonging to Beatles star John Lennon that have been recovered in Germany. Berlin police spokesman Winfrid Wenzel called the recovery of the trove of about 100 Lennon items a "great success" for the music world and also for Lennon's widow Yoko Ono. An elderly man died this afternoon when a tractor toppled on top of him near Delimara. The police said the accident happened at Xrobb l-Għagin about 1pm. A medical team tried to help the man, 74, from Marsaxlokk, but he died on the spot.  A magisterial inquiry is under way.

Large banks will get four years to raise capital buffers - source

European Union regulators have decided to give large eurozone banks up to four years to raise capital buffers, a source told Reuters on Tuesday, setting for the first time binding requirements that some lenders might find difficult to meet. Under new rules meant to reduce taxpayers' costs in a banking crisis, eurozone banks will have to issue a sufficient amount of debt that would be written down, or bailed-in, to absorb losses if they fail. One less chore for chronically ill patients

Patients suffering chronic illness will no longer need a weekly doctor’s certificate to receive social benefits, Social Solidarity Minister Michael Falzon said today. Addressing a press conference, Dr Falzon announced two bureaucracy reduction initiatives introduced as part of the ministry’s key performance indicators. Error in writ of summons leads to acquittal

The owner of an industrial garage was acquitted of having been in possession of fuel on which duty had not been paid, owing to an error in the writ of summons. Criminal action was instituted against George Pace, 54, from Ħamrun, after an inspection by Malta Resources Authority officials at his garage/yard in Paola led to the discovery of some 1,050 litres of gas oil over which relative duty had not been paid.
