Seven bodies found in migrant boat off Libya

The bodies of seven migrants were discovered today in a boat adrift off Libya while around 900 people were saved in operations in the southern Mediterranean, Italy's coastguard said. It was one of the most intense days of rescues recorded in the area in recent months and follows a sharp fall-off in the number of migrants reaching Italy. British defence minister Michael Fallon resigned from his position today saying he accepted his conduct in the past had fallen below high standards. Fallon was named in an a newspaper article earlier this week which said he had touched a radio presenter's knee in 2002. CT scanner found to be infection source in hospital

Researchers used electronic health records to hunt down the source of a potentially deadly hospital-acquired infection at the University of California, San Francisco. The culprit: a CT scanner in the hospital’s emergency department, according to a new report in JAMA Internal Medicine online October 23. Last weekend two Maltese teams were representing Malta in the Champions and Europa League of Table Football, which was held in Rochefort Belgium. On Saturday they participated in the preliminary rounds where Valletta Subbuteo club won the group with maximum points after winning against teams from Italy, Belgium, Austria, Hungary and France. Record drugs haul in 2017

Drugs seized by the police this year have reached record highs, according to information given in Parliament. The police confiscated more than 322 kilos of cocaine, 600 kilos of cannabis resin and 13 kilos of heroin between January 1 and October 14. A kilo of synthetic powder and 13 grams of synthetic drugs were also seized. Last year, the police seized 108 kilos of cannabis resin, a lot more than the 42 kilos confiscated in 2014. Woman worked 80-hour weeks in Paceville massage parlour, court hears

A Thai-born Italian masseuse told a court today of how she worked 12-hour days, seven days a week at a Paceville massage parlour.  The witness, who was testifying via video conferencing from the magistrate's chambers, told the court she charged clients €45 an hour for a Thai oil massage and got to keep €10 of that for herself.  At the end of the day she slept on a makeshift bed inside the parlour, having only a shower and a small electric stove but no kitchenette to prepare meals. Netflix Inc indefinitely halted production of political drama "House of Cards" on Tuesday following an allegation of sexual misconduct against series star Kevin Spacey. Falling bricks crush van in Floriana

Yet another construction site accident came close to tragedy today when a heap of bricks ended up crushing a parked van in Floriana.  The incident on Triq San Franġisk, some doors down from the SPCA animal shelter, left the van's front half flattened under the weight of the limestone bricks.  At the time of writing, it remained unclear what had caused the bricks to collapse.   Nobody was hurt and police said officers were dispatched to the scene.

Older patients having a heart attack often delay hospital trip

A significant proportion of older people having heart attacks put off going to a hospital, a recent study found. Many of these patients waited six hours or more, the study authors wrote in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society online October 18. “The time that the heart is lacking much-needed oxygen also includes the pre-hospital period, from the onset of symptoms to arriving for medical care,” said study author Gregory Ouellet of Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, in e-mail to Reuters Health. The number of pickpocketing cases has been soaring, with a sixfold increase in eight years, but it remains one of the most difficult crimes to solve. Almost 250 charged with prostitution over past five years

There were 239 people arraigned on charges of prostitution over the past five years, of which only 18 were foreign. Replying to a Parliamentary Question put by MP Glenn Bedingfield, Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia said that there were 209 women and 30 men charged. In the first nine months of this year, only 15 were charged, almost a third the number in 2016.
