Auditor queries recruitment at Gozo Ministry's department

The number of employees in a small department at the Gozo Ministry increased inexplicably in the few months that the Auditor General was conducting a review, a report showed. Eight-storey complex proposed at Mellieħa ‘community centre’

An application to construct an eight-storey complex in Mellieħa has been filed for a site previously earmarked by the locality’s council for a community centre. The project, which includes 120 apartments, a hotel, shopping complex and an underground car park is spearheaded by three development companies, including the one entrusted to build the Mercury Towers in Paceville, Located next to the former Belleview bakery, the site is made up of two large adjacent plots with a combined footprint of 3,600 square metres. Jesmond Xerri, 52, has been reported missing, the police said. They said he was last seen at 8pm yesterday in Balzan. Mr Xerri was wearing grey trousers, a red top, and black, white and brown shoes. Perpetrators resorting to more vicious domestic abuse

Abuse victims are increasingly facing more vicious attacks as perpetrators continue to be treated with impunity, support workers believe, as recently published figures show assaults are on the rise. So far this year, five people have been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with the use of a weapon, including a firearm or utensil, figures tabled in Parliament by Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia show. Motorcyclist injured in accident

A 41-year-old motorcyclist from Msida was grievously injured today following a traffic accident in Paola. The police said the biker was riding a Kymco which was involved in a collision with a Suzuki Baleno that was being driven by a 61-year-old man from Żejtun. The accident happened in Triq l-Isqof Buhaġiar, Paola at 2.30pm. The motorcyclist went to a health centre where he was later certified to be suffering from grievous injuries.

Thousands protest in Catalonia over independence vote jailings

Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets to protest at the jailing of nine former members of the regional government following an appearance at Spain's National Court for questioning in a probe over Catalonia's push for independence. Eight of the nine were jailed without possibility of bail while they are investigated on possible charges of sedition, rebellion and embezzlement following the regional parliament's declaration of secession from Spain last week. Judge jails nine former Catalan politicians amid probe over independence bid

A Spanish judge has ordered nine ex-members of the government in Catalonia jailed while they are investigated on possible charges of sedition, rebellion and embezzlement. Investigative magistrate Carmen Lamela issued the ruling on Thursday at the request of prosecutors who are pursuing a criminal case stemming from the declaration of secession the Parliament of Catalonia made on Friday. 10,000 passengers travel with tallinja card on the Valletta Ferry in a month

Police officer acquitted of involuntarily injuring pedestrian

The negligence of a victim in a traffic accident led to the acquittal of the police officer charged with having knocked down the pedestrian on a busy thoroughfare in Naxxar. Uncles sentenced to life for raping 10-year-old Indian girl

An Indian court today sentenced to life in prison two Indian men who were convicted of raping their 10-year-old niece in a case that caused a global furore when the girl was denied an abortion and had to give birth earlier this year. Road works at Qormi junction continue tonight

Nursing aid gets two-year jail term for hitting elderly patient

A nursing aid who slapped a 92-year old patient has been sentenced to two years in prison by a court which described his behaviour as “inexplicable and altogether condemnable”. George Michael Spiteri, 45, was faced with criminal action over an incident which took place two years ago when through his actions he placed the victim’s health in danger, slightly injured the latter and caused him suffering, all this in breach of his duties as a public servant. The accused had been assigned constant watch over the elderly patient at St Vincent de Paul.

Canned squid recalled

Sol & Mar squid in sunflower oil, garlic or paprika flavour has been recalled by the health authorities which said the product must not be consumed since it may contain salt crystals, called struvite crystals. These crystals form naturally during the production of canned fish products when proteins react with sea water. They may seem like glass and can cause scratches. The product, which comes in a metal can, has a durability date of December 31, 2023.
