Malta-built wireless ECG monitor enters testing phase

The University of Malta will next year run a six-month study to test a new type of heart monitor, made by a Maltese company, that will not require the complications of wiring the patient. The university was chosen to test the efficacy of the 24-hour ECG Holter monitor before it is produced and released onto the medical market. Watch: Brazilian policeman shoots two thieves as he holds baby in his arms

An off-duty policeman in Brazil shot dead two armed robbers while holding his child in one arm, according to Brazilian media.  CCTV footage shows Sergeant Rafael Souza shopping with his wife and child when the hooded robbers, wielding guns, tried to hold up a pharmacy in São Paulo. Sgt Souza drew his pistol and shot one of the attackers at close range. As the policeman’s wife took cover, the sergeant chased the second of the robbers. He then handed the child to his wife and shot the second robber (off camera).

Court hears about Community Chest Fund's active role in Paqpaqli show organisation

Updated 7.37pm - A court today heard about the active involvement of the Malta Community Chest Fund in the 2015 Paqpaqli car show in which several spectators were seriously injured when a car went out of control and crashed into the crowd along the second runway of Malta International Airport. Amsterdam to host EU drug agency in lucky-dip thriller

Amsterdam won the right to host the EU's drug agency when it leaves London after Brexit after tying with Milan in a vote on Monday that was then decided by the drawing of lots, diplomatic sources said. The Council of the European Union confirmed the choice of Amsterdam to host the European Medicines Agency (EMA) but gave no official account of the three rounds of vote which ended with disappointment for the Italian favourite in a lucky dip. Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia this evening could not give any information on investigations into the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, more than a month ago. The update was requested by Nationalist MP Simon Busuttil in a parliamentary question. Dr Farrugia said two inquiries were under way, by the inquiring magistrate and the police. The 29-year-old landed a fierce punch on Siboniso Gonya's chin at the SSE Arena inside the first bell. Lawyer wins damages over 'malicious and vexatious' claims

A lawyer has been granted compensation for damages after a court found that claims made about him before the Advocates and Legal Procurators Committee were ‘malicious and vexatious’. Lawyer John Bonello had been advising two siblings as prospective purchasers of an apartment in San Gwann. MSE Equity Price Index closes slightly higher

The MSE Equity Price Index opened the week 0.04% higher at 4,477.903 points as the gains in the share prices of BOV, HSBC, Farsons and MIDI outweighed the declines in Mapfre Middlesea and GlobalCapital. A former Second World War bunker enhanced to withstand nuclear, biological or chemical attacks has gone on sale in the Highlands. The "unique subterranean property" was originally built in 1941 to house the RAF during the conflict in Raigmore, Inverness. PA to select Sliema properties for scheduling

The Planning Authority is assessing a number of properties around Sliema for possible scheduling.  It said the process involves detailed consultations with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage. The Authority said that in order to minimise the risk of damage to the properties (in order to reduce their value) it is standard practice not to disclose the address of the properties until they are officially scheduled as required by law. Enemed signs €12m deal to build new jet fuel tanks

Enemed has struck a €12 million deal to build three new fuel storage tanks at Malta International Airport.  The agreement will see Indian conglomerate and global service provider Chemie-Tech develop new Jet A1 fuel tanks to help serve Malta's growing volume of air traffic.  Chemie-Tech beat P.E.G. to win the Enemed tender, with the contract signed earlier today at Enemed head offices. Transport Malta admitted the mistake when it received questions from this newspaper after a man received a CVA bill and saw a different car to his entering Valletta. Roberta Metsola has been Malta's best-performing European Parliament member over the past three years, a ranking algorithm created by MEPRanking.eu suggests.  With an overall score of 95.9, Dr Metsola ranks 34th out of the EP's 750 members and first among Malta's six MEPs.
