Do not remain immobile in the face of children in out-of-home care getting lost in the system, President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca urged stakeholders at a conference yesterday. “We cannot stand idle when so many children and young people are getting lost in the labyrinth of institutional structures and formal systems,” the President said. Sparing deserter Bergdahl prison time 'complete and total disgrace', says Trump

A military judge has ruled that a US Army sergeant who spent five years in captivity in Afghanistan after deserting his post should serve no prison time for endangering his comrades. The judge gave Bowe Bergdahl a dishonourable discharge, reduced his rank to private and said he must forfeit pay equal to $1,000 per month for 10 months. President Donald Trump tweeted that the sentence was "a complete and total disgrace to our Country and to our Military". New paving for Valletta pedestrian entrance

The pedestrian entry through City Gate in Valletta will be resurfaced, after the Times of Malta received reports that people were falling and hurting themselves “on a daily basis” in the area. The incidents have been attributed to the area not being levelled properly. The Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation, the company overseeing the works, said it only had received one report of someone claiming they tripped due to the temporary pedestrian area not being paved properly. Malta-Gozo tunnel project enters new phase of studies

A new phase of studies has been embarked upon as part of the Malta-Gozo tunnel project, Capital Projects Minister Ian Borg said today. He said in a statement that contractor Geotec Spa, which won a tender last June, started extracting investigative samples from different spots on land and at sea. These studies, each of which take 10 days, began on October 18. Transport Malta decided to start coring after summer to avoid disrupting activity in these areas during the season. Evacuations and road closures after a fire in central Moscow

Dozens of people have been evacuated in central Moscow after the rooftop of the State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts caught fire. Smoke was seen billowing over the building, which hosts paintings from private collections and is not used for exhibitions, according to the museum website. More than 70 firefighters arrived at the scene, according to the Moscow Emergencies Ministry. None of the museum's collection was damaged, the firefighters said.

No conflict of interest with American University of Malta appointment, says BOV chair

Bank of Valletta chairman Taddeo Scerri does not see any conflict of interest between his appointment as a member of the board of trustees of the American University of Malta (AUM) and his position at the bank. At the same time, the bank did not reply when asked whether the AUM or its shareholder, Jordan’s Sadeen Group, are BOV clients and whether the Cospicua-based university had obtained financing from the bank. Man arrested over 'explosives claim' at White House

A 33-year-old man has been arrested in Washington DC after the Secret Service said he approached one of its uniformed officers near the White House and claimed to have "dropped explosives" in the area. The incident prompted officials to put the White House on lockdown for several minutes and close nearby streets to pedestrians. White House locked down with 'subject' in custody

The White House is on lockdown and one person is in custody after reports of "suspicious activity" along the north fence line of the 18-acre complex. The US Secret Service tweeted: "Subject is in custody." Pennsylvania Avenue and Lafayette Park are also closed to pedestrians near the White House. Reporters and staff have been instructed not to leave the White House while the investigation continues. The incident came minutes after President Donald Trump departed the White House on Marine One to begin his trip to Asia.

British police investigate 'Kevin Spacey' sexual assault claims

Hollywood star Kevin Spacey is being investigated by British police over an alleged sexual assault, according to reports. It is understood officers from the Met Police's child abuse and sexual offences command are looking into claims the House Of Cards actor sexually assaulted a man in Lambeth in 2008. The Met declined to identify the alleged attacker but said in a statement: "On Wednesday, 1 November, City of London Police referred an allegation of sexual assault to the Metropolitan Police Service. Driving penalty system stalls

The extension of the point system to penalise reckless drivers has stalled, this newspaper has learnt, with no implementation date set a year after the measure was announced by the government. According to industry sources, the government planned to have the system up and running by July of this year but the implementation was pushed back because of the election. Car makers join forces in Europe to make electric charging stations widespread

A group of major motor manufacturers plans to open hundreds of fast-charging stations for electric cars in Europe and use a common plug technology in what they hope will be a big step towards mass acceptance of battery power. Police officer injured by man resisting arrest

A police officer was hospitalised this morning after a man turned violent while resisting arrest.  The incident happened at around 11.30am, police confirmed, when Rapid Intervention Unit members were called to Hompesch Road in Fgura.  Officers stopped a man there who however fought back, injuring one of the officers. He was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment. No information about his medical condition was available at the time of writing.  The aggressor was arrested and is in police custody.

Second man charged over Diamonds International hold-up

An Albanian man was today charged with being involved in the preparations leading to the October 5 armed holdup at a Tigne store. Artan Coku, 25, residing at Pietà, was charged with having on the Sunday morning before the holdup assisted the alleged perpetrators of the crime by scouting the area of the shop. Plastic barriers being used to run tidal traffic system

Automated bollards installed in May last year as part of a €235,000 tidal lane system to alleviate traffic congestion in Marsa have been out of service for months. Consequently, the system is being operated manually through the use of plastic barriers, which have to be moved to and fro twice daily to change the direction of traffic along Sir Paul Boffa Avenue.
