Watch: Keane distances himself from return to club management

Republic of Ireland assistant boss Roy Keane has stressed that thoughts of returning to club management are "on the back burner" for him at the moment. Cork receives first England call-up

Burnley midfielder Jack Cork has been called up to the England squad for the first time. The 28-year-old has been drafted in by manager Gareth Southgate for the upcoming friendlies against Germany and Brazil. Southgate has turned to the former Swansea and Southampton man after Raheem Sterling, Fabian Delph and Jordan Henderson became the latest withdrawals from his injury-hit squad. Public consultation on quotas to benefit women planned

The government would like to introduce quotas in favour of women in this legislature so that having women in national decision-making posts would no longer be a rarity, the prime minister said this evening. Dr Muscat was speaking at an activity marking the 70th anniversary since women achieved the right to vote. The activity was held by the Labour Party at the national library in Valletta.  Dr Muscat observed that the government has an electoral mandate to introduce quotas to favour women in politics. Assets freeze against well-known jeweller to stand

A court order for the freezing of all the assets of well-known jeweller George Tabone, currently facing criminal action over alleged receipt of stolen valuables, will stand until proceedings reached their conclusion at appeal stage. The decision was taken after a constitutional application filed by Mr Tabone, as owner of Gram Holdings, Gram Jewellers and Gram Collections, who has been facing criminal proceedings since 2013. Two held after considerable shoplifting at the airport

Two men were arrested this afternoon after allegedly shoplifting at the airport departures lounge. The police said the two Romanian men had reportedly stolen cosmetics and other items. They were found in possession of three luggage bags containing the stolen items, worth more than 5,000 euro.

Man grievously injured as skip falls on him

Times of Malta 

A Serbian man was seriously injured this afternoon when a skip fell on him at Magħtab, the police said. The accident happened at 4.30pm as the man, 42, was lowering the skip from a truck so that it could be emptied.  His injuries were described as grievous.

Fined €24,716 for possession of contraband cigarettes

An Ethiopian man, who runs a shop in Msida, has been handed a suspended sentence after a police search in his house yielded 42,560 contraband cigarettes  and 1.5kg of water pipe tobacco valued at €1,276.24.  Tesfaye Yirgu Zekarge, 46, was sentenced to a one-year jail term suspended for 18 months and a fine of €24,716, one-third of which is a civil debt payable to the Customs Department Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech also ordered the forfeiture of the contraband merchandise and any other goods... Chinese masseuse describes harrowing experience as she was forced into prostitution

A Chinese masseuse, who travelled to Malta to be employed in a massage parlour, described in court today how she was forced into prostitution instead. The woman gave evidence in proceedings against a couple facing human trafficking charges. She testified via video conference in the case against Winston Joseph Gera, 45, and his Chinese partner Zhang Tianxia, 35, of St Julian’s, who last week were arraigned over human trafficking charges. Bannister-linked Russian mining venture lost millions in public funds

Millions in public funds invested by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development were lost in a Russian mining venture linked to financial services watchdog chairman Joe Bannister, leaked documents show. Prof. Bannister is linked to the venture through a British Virgin Islands-based company, which was a shareholder in Imperial Mining Holdings Limited (IMHL). Opec seeks consensus on duration of oil cut pact before meeting

Opec is seeking to achieve consensus agreement before a meeting on November 30 on how long to extend a global pact to curb oil production, Opec's secretary general said today, with no country unwilling to prolong the accord. When one blunder is not enough: Police arraignment mix-up investigated by 'wrong' board

A police mix-up which saw a man wrongly arraigned for alleged involvement in a Birkirkara hold-up was compounded by a second mix-up, when the government asked the wrong Police Board to investigate one of the police inspectors involved. The case goes back to August 4, 2013 when a hold-up took place at a convenience shop in Birkirkara. One of the investigating officers was Inspector Elton Taliana. Asphalting works on Cannon Road from tonight

Transport Malta’s contractor will start laying a layer of asphalt on Cannon Road in Sta Venera, as from 8pm tonight. The works will continue until 5am when the road will be opened for traffic, for works to resume again for the following two nights. Parts of the road will be closed between 8pm and 5am each night. No vehicles, including public transport, will have access from the side of the Bank of Valletta headquarters, while the works are ongoing. Autopsies to determine whether teenagers died after sexual assaults

Autopsies are being carried out to determine the cause of death of 26 teenage African girls, whose corpses were picked up in the Mediterranean. CNN reported that the girls, aged between 14 and 18, were from Niger and Nigeria and were probably trying to get to the European mainland from Libya. A Spanish warship, which had over 370 other rescued migrants on board from four separate operations, took the corpses to Salerno. The Attorney General has called for the seven high profile individuals involved in Panama Papers appeals to be joined in the constitutional suit filed by Simon Busuttil. France today asked its European partners to agree on curbing international funding of states that provide tax shelters, following the huge leak of documents showing the tax affairs of the rich and famous.
