WATCH: Astros beat Dodgers for maiden World Series title

Times of Malta

The Houston Astros won the World Series on Wednesday on the back of a two-run home run by George Springer that busted the game open and lifted the team to a 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game Seven. The Astros clinched the best-of-seven series 4-3 for the first franchise title in a 55-year existence, and did so against a Dodgers team that had Major League Baseball's best regular season record. The Astros jumped on Dodgers starting pitcher Yu Darvish early, scoring all five runs in the... Читать дальше...

Understanding the well-being and risks faced by sex workers

Times of Malta

A Maltese master’s student has conducted research on the well-being and risks faced by different categories of sex workers in the Netherlands, the findings of which could be adapted to the Maltese context if the country moved towards the legislation of sex work. Bridget Borg, 24, carried out the research for her thesis in part fulfilment of a taught MSc in Sociology: Contemporary Social Problems, at Utrecht University, the Netherlands, from which she recently graduated cum laude. The thesis, entitled... Читать дальше...

All maritime clusters on deck for ENMC transition

Times of Malta

Francis Vallat, co-founder and first vice-president of the European Network of Maritime Clusters and chairman since 2011, resigned from his chairmanship during the annual meeting held in Elsinore, Denmark, on October 25 and 26. After six years at the helm of the network – created in 2005 in Vallat’s Paris office – Mr Vallat decided to resign in order to give a younger highly reputable maritime personality a chance to allow new ideas and blood into the ENMC. In fact, the transition had been carefully prepared since autumn 2016... Читать дальше...

In regulators we must trust

Times of Malta

Given the highly topical subject of money-laundering and criminality in Malta, a timely conference focusing on company law, organised by the University of Malta’s commercial law department and the Malta Law Association, heard two important addresses by Finance Minister Edward Scicluna and by David Fabri, head of the commercial law department. The minister said legislation setting up a registry of companies’ beneficial owners would be published shortly. The registry, which was a requirement of a new EU anti-money-laundering directive... Police ‘closing in' on Caruana Galizia murder suspect car

Times of Malta

The police were closing in on the suspicious car seen at a vantage point overlooking the road where Daphne Caruana Galizia was killed, but it was still unclear whether this would prove useful in the investigation, sources said. They said the efforts to identify the car were at an “advanced” stage. Times of Malta reported last week that investigators did not exclude the possibility that the car was used by the person who detonated the powerful explosive device. It was seen parked in the middle of... Читать дальше...

Dictating the constitutional agenda - Arnold Cassola

Times of Malta

Judge Giovanni Bonello has stated that the major flaw of our Constitution lies in the fact that it was written by gentlemen for the use of gentlemen, but instead it has ended up being abused by scoundrels. Whether one agrees with the gentlemen part or not, it has certainly been hijacked by scoundrels. Scoundrels with hidden companies or accounts in Panama or Jersey, lawmakers who end up enacting laws tailor-made to serve nominee companies, żviluppaturi (developers) and/or business interests they collaborate with... Times of Malta

The Permanent Commission Against Corruption has not conducted any investigations for the past six months, pending the appointment of two new members, the Times of Malta is informed. The three-member commission is chaired by Judge Lawrence Quintano, who is still in office. The two remaining posts have been vacant since the middle of the year. The post occupied by lawyer Yana Micallef Stafrace became vacant when she was appointed magistrate, and the other opened when former magistrate Joe Cassar passed away suddenly. Читать дальше...

November starts with two-year high for European shares

Times of Malta

European stocks hit a two-year peak yesterday, lifted by resilient company earnings and record highs in world stocks, though a slump in Standard Chartered shares kept the banking sector under a cloud. The pan-European STOXX 600 ended up 0.4 per cent after rising earlier in the session by as much as 0.7 per cent to 398.05 points, a level last seen in August 2015. Some of that was down to Germany's DAX index, which, playing catch-up after Tuesday's holiday, jumped 1.8 per cent to a fresh record high... Читать дальше...

Ministers against Malta - Ranier Fsadni

Times of Malta

Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated for a motive we do not yet know for sure, but against a background of institutional weakness that is apparent to anyone whose mind is clear of cant and spin. It’s not our cardboard public institutions that killed her. But they made her life much more dangerous and more difficult to protect. Those of us who are publicly demonstrating their outrage are not showing disrespect for the institutions. On the contrary. We are outraged that these institutions – the... Читать дальше...

Untimely choice of title - Anthony Trevisan

Times of Malta

This has been a remarkable year for Malta. It may also be said it was going remarkably well for the Prime Minister and his government until recent events. Earlier this year, the Prime Minister deftly sidestepped serious accusations of wrongdoing, called an early election which he won handsomely, presided over a booming economy which no doubt had a lot to do with his electoral victory. It now seems he may have been in the running for the EU presidency or, at least, evidently that tasty carrot had... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

The Valletta Boat Show is this week celebrating its 10th anniversary at Haywharf, Pietà. Over 70 exhibitors from around the world, including the most prestigious names in the boating and yachting industry, will display luxurious sailing boats, power boats and speed boats, including a large range of different lines. Unbelievable but true

Times of Malta

In two days, I experienced two cur-ious coincidences. In the September 29 issue of the Times of Malta, I saw a feature on Hugh Hefner, the founder of Playboy magazine in 1953. Later, I had a discussion with a friend of mine on the two Pace painters of the second half of the 18th century, qualified in 1820 as “les duex Pace excellent dans le portrait”. In the evening, I started researching the marriage registers of Valletta to try and establish whether and when they were married. By sheer coincidence... Читать дальше...

An intense monologue

Times of Malta

Actress Sarah Camilleri is performing in a one-woman show this weekend at St James Cavalier. Qaħba Jien? tells the story of a beautiful woman with a  bad reputation. Rumours swirl around her personal affairs, while the women of the town despise and envy her at the same time. The monologue reflects upon one woman’s experience of being branded ‘qaħba’, (prostitute, or slut), and the insensitivity and misogyny of society’s labelling of a beautiful woman. Through an intense dialogue with the audience... Читать дальше...

Flirting with danger

Times of Malta

“The more people I meet, the more I like my dog.” Whoever said that first was really onto something. A prominent journalist has just been assassinated in the most sadistic and barbaric way possible - burnt to death in the charred remains of her car - and Facebook is full of cackling and feculent morons making fun of the people protesting this gruesome event. Facebook truly is cancer and hell truly is other people. Social media brings out the worst in us because it offers freedom, not of expression or thoughtfulness but of spite... Читать дальше...

Storytelling workshops

Times of Malta

Spazju Kreattiv is hosting a series of workshops, entitled Of Fairy Tales and You, to encourage children to tell stories. Everyone may be able to tell meaningful stories but not everyone does. Experts say that discovering the power to tell stories can influence the way one connects with others, such as families and school communities. Working through a series of folk tales, fairy tales and storytelling exercises, these workshops will encourage children to choose stories they relate to and be prepared... Читать дальше...

Political martyr

Times of Malta

A monument should immediately be erected, facing Castile, in memory of murdered Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was executed because she refused to remain silent. Almost all who made Malta what it is today are immortalised in the area of Castille and the Barrakka. When Daphne was still a teenager, she, along with several others, chained herself to the railings facing Castille for the sake of liberty. I posted this request on Facebook the day after the murder and I had several favorable comments. I am... Читать дальше...

Woman of substance

Times of Malta

I had met Daphne Caruana Galizia, in her younger days, at the National Blood Bank. She was a blood donor. That speaks for itself as to who was Daphne. She gave her blood to save lives. She risked her life to defend freedomof expression. She finally gave her all in her search of the truth. Thank you, Daphne.

Spur sinks Real while Aguero breaks City record

Times of Malta

Dele Alli fired a double as Tottenham beat holders Real Madrid 3-1 to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages. Alli's close-range effort separated the two sides at half-time and the England international made it 2-0 with a shot that took a big deflection off Sergio Ramos. Harry Kane set up Christian Eriksen for Tottenham's third with 25 minutes left and although Cristiano Ronaldo pulled one back for the defending champions, their first Wembley appearance ended in defeat. Tottenham head the... Читать дальше...
