Birdlife claims illegal bird sales fuelled by finch trapping

Times of Malta

An undercover operation conducted at the Sunday monti in Floriana and pet shops has uncovered “a racket” in the sale of birds used by trappers, Birdlife Malta said. The operation carried out by the bird conservation group highlighted multiple abuses that were made worse when the government opened the trapping season for finches in 2014. Birdlife conservation manager Nick Barbara said trapped finches did not live long in captivity and every season trappers would have to replenish their stock by buying birds that were at times imported illegally.

Economic growth 'not cascading through the economy' - Mario de Marco

Times of Malta

The European Commission's economic winter forecast for Malta echoed the position adopted by the Nationalist Party over the past months, deputy leader Mario de Marco said this morning. The report, he said, pointed out that economic growth was emanating from iGaming and financial services and made no reference to sectors created during this administration. "This is perfectly understandable given that this administration did not create any new economic sector," he said. He added that the report also... Читать дальше...

Markets take cue from US policies and earnings season

Times of Malta

The global economy ended 2016 on a strong note, and started this year in the same vein. Economic data such as PMIs and leading economic indicators from the world’s major economies continue to indicate strong and robust growth, at least in the short- to medium-term. This positive string of economic data releases can be explained by a concoction of looser economic policy and expectations of an improving global economic scenario. This mix of policies in the leading emerging and developed economies is... Читать дальше...

The U-turn came on Monday with the release of Playboy's March-April issue. Mongooses live longer after growing up in tough conditions, research shows

Times of Malta

Growing up in tough conditions can make wild animals live longer, new research suggests. Scientists found that male banded mongooses that experienced poor conditions in their first year had longer lives, suggesting those born into a challenging environment "live slow, die old", while those with an easier first year "live fast, die young". However, there was no difference in the number of offspring they fathered. The males that fathered the most pups were those that grew up when conditions were highly variable. Читать дальше...

Paris St Germain will be well-equipped to renew battle with Barcelona in their Champions League round of 16 first leg at the Parc des Princes today after key midfielder Marco Verratti made a well-timed return to the team. Two years ago, Barcelona humbled PSG 3-1 in Paris in the first leg of their quarter-final tie when the French champions were without talismanic forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Verratti, and saw captain Thiago Silva limp off the pitch after 21 minutes. Borussia hope for big-stage lift against Benfica

Times of Malta

With just two wins from their past seven Bundesliga games, Thomas Tuchel’s team have long dropped out of the title race and Saturday’s shock 2-1 loss to bottom side Darmstadt left them 15 points adrift of leaders Bayern Munich. But the Ruhr valley club have been sensational in the Champions League... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

Leicester City’s beleaguered manager Claudio Ranieri suggested he is ready to drop some of the players who won them the Premier League title as the Italian seeks to stave off relegation just one season later. The champions have yet to win – or even score – in six league matches in 2017 and were beaten 2-0 by fellow relegation strugglers Swansea City on Sunday. The latest setback leaves them just one point above the relegation zone with the club seemingly free-falling into the Championship. When asked... Читать дальше...

Suso hands Milan point at Lazio

Times of Malta

Suso struck an 85th-minute equaliser as Milan drew 1-1 at Lazio in Serie A last night. A Lucas Biglia penalty gave Lazio a 1-0 half-time lead, but the hosts could not add to their advantage at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. And Suso struck with five minutes remaining to earn the Rossoneri a point. A win would have taken Lazio to fourth. Instead they remain sixth, three points and a place better off than their visitors.
