Germany seeks to reduce child benefit paid to EU migrants

Times of Malta

Germany is seeking the flexibility to adjust child benefits for European Union migrants, which could mean less money for thousands of foreigners working in the country. Citizens of other EU countries who work in Germany are entitled to child benefits even if their children live in another EU nation - an issue that has prompted criticism from nationalist parties. A spokeswoman for the finance ministry said the proposed bill would adjust payments for migrants' children living outside Germany to take account of the cost of living in that country. A textbook has sparked outrage in India for instructing young pupils to put a kitten in an unventilated box and wait for it to die to show that living beings need air. The experiment described in the environmental science textbook for nine-year-olds tells the students to place two kittens in separate boxes, one of them without air holes, to see the result. "The kitten inside the box without holes has died," the instructions read. The book has been used by hundreds of schools in north India since last April. Читать дальше...

Garnishee orders against the press should be prohibited as there was no need for such a “disproportionate” measure in a democratic society based on fundamental rights and freedoms, says the dean of the Faculty of Laws. The Times of Malta sought Kevin Aquilina’s reaction to the controversy surrounding Economy Minister Chris Cardona who, two days ago, slapped blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia with a €47,460 garnishee order. Clock ticking for English FA, says Sports Minister

The English Football Association was warned “the clock is ticking” after a motion of no confidence was passed during a British Parliamentary debate into its governance yesterday. Sports Minister Tracey Crouch said the world’s oldest soccer federation was not only in danger of losing £30 million ($37.54 million) of public money if it fails to modernise, but that legislation could be brought in to force change. Crouch said the current model of the 154-year-old institution “does not stand up to scrutiny”. Читать дальше...

Wenger urges Arsenal fans to remain ‘united’

Times of Malta

Arsene Wenger swerved questions over his Arsenal future as he called on supporters to remain “united” with the team following back-to-back defeats. The Frenchman celebrated 20 years in charge of the Gunners last October but, after a shock home reverse against Watford and a 3-1 loss at Chelsea, the chances of securing a first Premier League title since 2004 are slim. Wenger said last week that his “gut feeling” would help him determine whether to extend his stay – with his current deal expiring in the summer ... Читать дальше...
