Warren Buffett rails against fee-hungry Wall Street managers

Billionaire Warren Buffett, whose stock picks over several decades have enriched generations of Berkshire Hathaway Inc shareholders, delivered a black eye to the investment industry on Saturday, urging ordinary investors to buy plain-vanilla index funds. "When trillions of dollars are managed by Wall Streeters charging high fees, it will usually be the managers who reap outsized profits, not the clients," Buffett said in his annual letter to shareholders. Gaming sector wages must be seen in context - Mallia

Gaming Minister Manuel Mallia shot back at a recent survey that found gaming executives felt underpaid, saying that their wages were higher than in other sectors on the island. “You have to look at this in the context of the island we are on. The gaming industry’s wages in Malta are known to be high compared to other industries, so much so that other industries can find it difficult to hang on to employees, who are leaving for the better-paying gaming companies,” Dr Mallia said. Syrian cinematographer to miss Oscars after being denied entry to US

A Syrian cinematographer whose latest work is nominated for an Oscar will be unable to attend tomorrow's Academy Awards ceremony after being denied entry into the United States.  Khaled Khateeb, 21, was due to attend the award ceremony following the nomination of The White Helmets for best documentary short. The 40-minute Netflix film tells the story of rescue workers who risk their lives to save civilians affected by the civil war. Man drives into crowd in German town, injuring three

Updated 8.20pm A man drove into a crowd standing by a bakery in the southwestern German town of Heidelberg today, injuring three people but a police spokesman said it was not yet possible to say whether it was a terrorist attack. Police said in a statement that one of the injured was seriously hurt. The suspect was seen getting out of the car with a knife and was later tracked down to near a swimming pool. He is now in a hospital in Heidelberg having been shot by police while being arrested, leaving him seriously injured, they said. Читать дальше...

Labour Party stalwart Nenu Buhagiar dies aged 96

Labour Party officials have paid tribute to party stalwart Nenu Buhagiar following his death at the age of 96.  Mr Buhagiar was a well-known figure in Gzira and dedicated member of the PL, which in a statement expressing its condolences described him as a "soldier of steel".  He served time in prison following the 1958 General Workers Union strike and subsequent riots.  Prime Minister Joseph Muscat was among the first to offer his condolences, tweeting that he was "extremely saddened" by news of Mr Buhagiar's demise. Hibernians and Hamrun Spartans played out a six-goal thriller which saw the Paolites held to a 3-3 draw at the National Stadium. Hibs were off to a flyer and Jurgen Degabriele put them ahead after three minutes. Chelsea's stretched their lead at the top of the Premier League to 11 points with a 3-1 victory over a resolute Swansea City side at Stamford Bridge today. Cesc Fabregas marked his 300th Premier League appearance with his side's opener after 19 minutes, finishing well after being picked out by Pedro's cut-back. Armed thief robs Rabat lotto booth

A knife-wielding man wearing a hoodie and sunglasses robbed a Rabat lotto booth this afternoon, police said this afternoon.  The man entered the lotto booth on Triq San Pawl at around 4.45pm and told the 58-year-old Rabat woman working there to hand over any money in the shop till. He made away with an undisclosed amount of cash.  The thief made a quick getaway and nobody was hurt during the hold-up.  Magistrate Josette Demicoli has ordered an inquiry into the crime. Rabat police are investigating further.

Government refuses to publish Gozo swimming pool agreement

The government is refusing to publish a memorandum of understanding it signed with a private company – 240 Ltd – to transfer a piece of public land where a swimming pool complex will be built in Gozo. The announcement of the Natatorium complex project was made by the Ministry for Gozo last November. Few details about it have been given by the government so far and it is not known what type of investment will be made. Traffic Bill gets green light from stakeholders

Insurance companies, cyclists, taxi drivers and the Opposition have welcomed a Bill proposing stricter alcohol limits for motorists and extending the points system across the board to make roads safer. Details of these amendments to the Traffic Regulations Ordnance were given last Wednesday in Parliament by Justice Minister Owen Bonnici during the Second Reading Stage of this Bill. Forklift accident leaves man grievously injured

An accident involving a forklift in Naxxar left a 58-year-old grievously injured this morning.  The 58-year-old man was operating the machine on Triq ir-Ramla when he accidentally hit a lever and ended up pinned between some machinery, police said. The accident happened at around 10am.  An ambulance took the man to Mater Dei hospital. Police are investigating further.

Grievously injured while using a chainsaw in Siġġiewi

A 46-year-old man was grievously injured this morning while using a chainsaw in the San Blas area of Siġġiewi, police said in a statement.  The Pieta' man was hurt at around 10.15am. An ambulance took him to Mater Dei Hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries. Police investigations are ongoing.

Man, 68, badly hurt after falling off stationary vehicle

A 68-year-old Mġarr man who reportedly slipped and fell off a stationary pick-up truck is grievously injured, police said in a statement.  The incident happened on Triq il-Banjijiet Rumani in Mġarr at around 11am. The man was rushed to Mater Dei hospital by ambulance. Police are investigating further.

Two senior citizens hit by car at entrance to Mater Dei hospital

Updated 2.41pm Two senior citizens from Tarxien were grievously injured this morning after they were hit by a car at the entrance to Mater Dei hospital.  The two, aged 68 and 66, were hit by a Honda Fit being driven by a 34-year-old man from Mtarfa at around 9.35am.  Both remain in the care of doctors at Mater Dei hospital. Police say their investigations are ongoing.
