JG Vassallo, journalist and former union man dies

Journalist and opinionist Joseph George Vassallo died today, aged 93.  Better known as JG, Mr Vassallo joined the editorial staff of Times of Malta in 1950 and in 1962 was appointed head of news at Rediffusion Malta and Television Service. After retirement, he continued contributing in several Maltese and English-language publications throughout his career, including The Malta Independent. Ronaldo, Angelina Jolie to star in TV drama about Syrian refugees

Real Madrid player Cristiano Ronaldo is apparently signed up to star with Angelina Jolie in a TV drama about Syrian refugees. The footballer was named by the Turkish programme's director as one of the high-profile cast members he had secured to start filming Hayat Koprusu in April. Two of every three missing people are youths

Two of every three missing people last year were youths, debunking the myth that elderly patients with dementia were the bulk of the problem. Police statistics on missing persons tabled in Parliament by Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela show that there were 837 reports to the police about missing persons last year. Insulin needles for adult diabetics are unavailable

Diabetics who needed regular insulin injections were being forced to get by with needles usually used by children, as the eight-millimetre ones for adults were out of stock, Times of Malta was told. The patients who require the needles – normally used with injection pens to deliver injectable medication into the body – are being told the eight-millimetre needles are unavailable. Watch: Video captures sinkhole swallowing minivan

Two vehicles were swallowed by a massive sinkhole in Los Angeles, California, injuring one woman. Footage from a TV news helicopter showed the second vehicles falling vertically into the 20-foot sinkhole. Firefighters were able to rescue the injured woman before the second car fell. A huge storm is rolling through California, bringing the heaviest rainfall the state has seen in six years. At least two people have died in the storm.

Sean Raggett's 89th-minute header earned Lincoln another stunning FA Cup upset as they won 1-0 at Burnley to reach the quarter-finals. The National League side gave as good as they got throughout an end-to-end encounter at Turf Moor and got their reward with 60 seconds left. When a Sam Habergham corner was headed back across goal by Luke Waterfall, Raggett nodded in at the back post. As a result, Danny Cowley's Imps become the first non-league side to reach the last eight since QPR in 1914.

One killed, 20 hurt as train derails off Brussels

One person has been killed and up to 20 others were injured after a passenger train derailed and flipped on its side near the Belgian capital Brussels. Leuven mayor Louis Tobback said the person who died in Saturday's accident was most likely not on the train itself, but was caught on or near the rails. The accident occurred early in the afternoon as the train left Leuven station at slow speed in the direction of Brussels Airport and the city itself. A man was critically injured when he was attacked by a shark while spear fishing on Australia's Great Barrier Reef, an official said. The 26-year-old was bitten repeatedly on a leg as he dived near Hinchinbrook Island off the coast of Queensland state on Saturday.
