Work permits would be a boon for migrants and the construction industry

Giving migrants a work permit would be a boon for them and the construction industry, according to the president of the Malta Developers Association. Sandro Chetcuti said migrants should have their situation regularised to ensure they are recruited legally by construction firms that cannot find Maltese willing to do certain jobs. Benjamin Netanyahu in West Bank settlement pledge after outpost demolished

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to establish the first new West Bank settlement in more than two decades "as soon as possible", promising to make up for the demolition of an illegal settler outpost. Fewer church weddings took place in Malta last year

A total of 1,354 Church weddings were registered at the Archbishop’s Curia last year, 104 less than in 2015. Both partners in 1,160 of them were Maltese. Ten weddings between Maltese couples living abroad were also registered and there were 11 weddings between foreign couples. There were 73 weddings between Maltese and foreigners (34 men and 39 women) - 39 between Maltese and foreign Catholics, 26 between Maltese Catholics and foreign Christians and eight between Maltese and non-Christian foreigners. Hammer attacker gets one year in jail

A man was today sent to prison for a year following a hammer attack in Paola on Saturday at around 1pm. Syrian Mohammed Al Hussein, 38, residing in Marsa pleaded guilty to having assaulted his victim, also a Syrian, who suffered serious head injuries and a dislocated right hand finger. British band Coldplay announced today they will endorse Malta-based search-and-rescue charity MOAS as long-term patrons in aid of its humanitarian work with migrants and refugees. New cancer medicine on government formulary

A new cancer medicine Capecitabine is to be included in the government formulary with immediate effect, Health Minister Chris Fearne said today. Breast, stomach, liver and pancreas cancer patients will benefit from the drug. It is estimated that around 100 patients need this medicine each year. The minister said new cancer medicine to be added to the formulary in the coming weeks includes Mitomycine and Doxorubicin. Some 500 patients would benefit. Other cancer medicine is planned for inclusion in the coming months.

Three Italians to be charged with drugs importation after cannabis find

Three Italians are expected to be arraigned in court tomorrow after some 2.5 kilograms of cannabis were found in a car they were just as it arrived in Malta from Sicily. The police said the drug was found by the Drug Squad last night following weeks of observation. Man who planned to sell contraband cigarettes gets suspended jail term

A man was today given a suspended prison sentence after he admitted keeping in his possession around 25,000 contraband cigarettes with the intention of selling them. Motorcyclist injured in Mġarr crash

A 35-year-old motorcyclist was injured this morning when he crashed in Mġarr. The police said the Sta Venera resident lost control of his Yamaha in Triq Sir Temi Żammit at about 11.30 am. His injuries were described as grievous.
