COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio's largest school district has approved a contract agreement with its new superintendent. The Columbus Board of Education on Saturday approved a three-year deal with Talisa Dixon that will pay her $242,000 a year, plus incentives. Dixon is currently superintendent of Cleveland Heights-University Heights City Schools and previously said she wouldn't leave the suburban Cleveland district until the school year ends in July. Houston was holding a celebration Sunday outside City Hall, including a moment of silence to remember the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) — A new initiative from Habitat for Humanity has kicked off in western Wisconsin to encourage volunteerism and ultimately provide housing assistance for veterans. (AP) — A judge has cleared the way for jury selection to begin Tuesday in a homicide trial in the disappearance a quarter-century ago of a central Pennsylvania woman whose body has never been found. Sixty-nine-year-old Loyd Groves is charged in the death of 40-year-old Katherine Heckel, last seen in July 1991 leaving the former International Paper Co. mill in Lock Haven for lunch. PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) — A 53-year-old woman and her mother are dead in what Port Huron police are investigating as a possible homicide and suicide. The daughter's body was found about 1 p.m. Saturday by a family friend next to the body of her 79-year-old mother. Police say a handgun appears to have been used. Port Huron is about 55 miles (88 kilometers) northeast of Detroit. Police believe the older woman lived in Burtchville Township, northwest of Port Huron.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Some National Guard students attending North Dakota colleges on ROTC scholarships are scrambling to find ways to stay in school after the state Guard announced it could no longer fund its share of the program. The students were expecting free tuition that for years has been covered by a combination of federal and state funds. Lee Bushaw, the Guard's education services officer, said the state no longer has enough money to cover a shortfall created by both tuition increases and a decline in federal support. ENID, Okla. (AP) — Authorities in Garfield County have arrested a 40-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his 33-year-old brother. Investigators say the stabbing occurred Saturday morning at a residence in Enid, located about 67 miles north-northwest of Oklahoma City. Officers were called to the residence after a caller reported someone had been stabbed and needed an ambulance. GRETNA, La. (AP) — A grand jury has charged the wife of a sheriff's deputy in southeastern Louisiana in his killing but the woman contends her husband shot himself in the head. Local media report a Jefferson Parish grand jury charged Shantel Parria with second-degree murder Thursday in the shooting death of her husband, a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office sergeant. NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — A Coast Guard Academy graduate who won praise for the 1986 rescue of two people from a plane crash in a lake has been inducted into the service academy's Hall of Heroes. Mark Feldman piloted a helicopter that pulled the two victims from Lake St. Clair in Ontario, Canada, after their plane crashed in a snow storm. The Ann Arbor school says the University of Michigan Biosciences Initiative awarded $5.6 million for the Michigan Concussion Center.
