SILVER BAY, Minn. (AP) — An annual remembrance ceremony on Minnesota's North Shore is set to mark the 43rd anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The freighter sank in a massive storm on eastern Lake Superior on Nov. 10, 1075. Many of the crew members had ties to northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. UTQIAGVIK, Alaska (AP) — People in the nation's northernmost town are celebrating the end of a successful fall whaling season, but it also has been a time of mourning after the recent deaths of two whale hunters. The season wrapped up in Utqiagvik (ook-GAR'-vik) in late October, Alaska's Energy Desk reported . Subsistence hunters in the town formerly known as Barrow brought in their full quota of 19 bowhead whales. Democrats apparently have flipped another Republican congressional seat in California, with businessman Harley Rouda declaring victory Saturday over veteran Republican Rep. ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Alaska Airlines has a new, $50 million hangar in Anchorage that's large enough to house two Boeing 737s. KTVA reports the airline unveiled the massive hangar this week at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. The new facility measures more than 100,000 square feet. The old, outgrown hangar was opened in 1954. The new hangar has a heat-recovery system. HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals has ruled against a woman who was convicted of giving heroin to a 16-year-old girl. The Herald-Dispatch reports , 38-year-old Michelle Kitchen was sentenced in 2016 to serve four to 20 years in prison. She received probation and was in a recovery program, but probation was revoked and her original sentence reinstated after she tested positive for morphine. MINDEN, Nev. (AP) — After a wildfire burns swaths of land, someone has to investigate the clues left behind to determine the fire's cause and, possibly, prevent another one. A hands-on class offered near a northern Nevada airport teaches participants how to do it. HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Several community groups in Hartford have banded together to fight violence in the capital city. The Hartford Community Safety Coalition is planning a wide range of initiatives for the next year aimed at reducing gun violence, raising awareness and addressing trauma. BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) — A Vermont solar energy development company has announced plans to build solar panels on a Brattleboro parking garage. The Brattleboro Reformer reports Green Lantern Solar said in a letter of intent approved by the town Select Board Tuesday it is looking to run a microgrid system, a storage battery and a means to use the power gathered from the parking garage. The letter of intent prevents the town from selling or leasing the space until December 2019, and it gives the town a chance to buy discounted net-metering credits.

The 46-foot white spruce donated by Ross McKellar and Teresa Simpson from Oxford, Nova Scotia will be cut down during a ceremony on Thursday. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The Florida secretary of state ordered recounts in the U.S. Senate and governor races on Saturday, an unprecedented review of two major races in the state that took five weeks to decide the 2000 presidential election. Secretary Ken Detzner issued the order after the unofficial results in both races fell within the margin that by law triggers a recount. In a remote corner of the Sierra Nevada, a financial experiment is about to begin. Once this winter’s snow melts, workers will cut down small trees and burn undergrowth across 5,000 acres of the Tahoe National Forest. BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A lawsuit by an Idaho utility against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency concerning water temperature standards below a hydroelectric project where federally protected fall chinook salmon reproduce has been put on hold. A U.S. District Court judge last week agreed to stay the lawsuit by Idaho Power against the EPA while the federal agency works to complete tasks requested by the state of Idaho in 2012. CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Police say they have taken into custody a 32-year-old homeless man after he allegedly stabbed a good Samaritan who was trying to help him. Police say that on Saturday morning in the River North neighborhood a 39-year old man had offered to take the homeless man a ride to his home to clean up when the homeless man stabbed him in the hand and then tried to steal his van. CORINTH, Miss. (AP) — The suspect charged with capital murder in the shooting of an off-duty Mississippi Highway Patrol trooper has been released from jail. Attorneys for 43-year-old Troy Anthony Eaton, of Rienzi, say his client was released Friday shortly after Tippah County Circuit Court Judge Andrew Howorth set bond at $200,000 and $100,000 on an attempted murder charge.
