MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) — Families and community members mourned the loss of 30 dogs at a memorial service after a western Michigan kennel was engulfed in flames. Clock Funeral Home in Muskegon held the service Thursday to honor the pets that died in the fire at Storm's Ahead Kennels in Fruitport Township. The kennel was full when the fire occurred March 30, the first day of spring break for many local families. VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Legion of Christ religious order says it will try to respond to requests for compensation from former seminarians who were sexually abused by its founder and then discredited by officials for having publicly denounced him. Victims of the Rev. Marcial Maciel petitioned the Legion's recently concluded leadership meeting seeking public recognition of their status as victims of both Maciel and the order, which mounted a prolonged campaign to defame victims after they went public with allegations in 1997. BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A white police officer who shot and killed a black man during a struggle outside a Baton Rouge convenience store has appealed his firing over the deadly confrontation nearly two years ago. An attorney for the former officer, Blane Salamoni, says he filed the appeal with a civil service board Thursday. Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul fired Salamoni on March 30, less than a week after Louisiana's attorney general ruled out state criminal charges in Alton Sterling's July 2016 shooting death. HANOVER, N.H. (AP) — A bear whose life was spared last spring by New Hampshire's governor has returned with four new cubs to the college town where she has feasted for the last few years. The bear was to be euthanized last May after two of her offspring entered a home near Dartmouth College in Hanover. Republican Gov. Chris Sununu instead ordered them relocated after public outcry. HOUSTON (AP) — The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. increased by five this week to 1,008. At this time a year ago there were 847 active rigs. Houston oilfield services company Baker Hughes reported Friday that 815 rigs drilled for oil this week and 192 for gas. One was listed as miscellaneous. Among major oil- and gas-producing states, Texas added three rigs, Oklahoma gained two while Colorado, Louisiana and Ohio each added one. Kansas, New Mexico and West Virginia each lost one rig. SEATTLE (AP) — The family of a Native American man fatally shot by police who mistook a cellphone for a gun has filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Lakewood and police involved in the 2015 shooting. WARRENTON, Ore. (AP) — The Warrenton-Hammond School District will ask voters this fall to approve a $32.4 million bond to begin moving its schools out of the tsunami inundation zone. The Daily Astorian reported Friday that the district wants to buy a 70- to 80-acre plot of land for a campus on higher ground and build a new middle school there.
