A’s mistakes help Astros win 8-4, take series

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

HOUSTON - The difference between an assured, accomplished team such as the champion Astros and the young up-and-coming A’s is that the wheels can still come off in a disastrous inning for Oakland. And so it was Sunday at Minute Maid Park, where a tie game quickly turned into an 8-4 Houston win thanks to a series of Oakland mistakes in the seventh inning that led to the A’s first series loss in two weeks. The A’s got another quality start from Trevor Cahill, who went six innings and allowed four runs... Читать дальше...

Prosecutors: Bill Cosby sexual-assault conviction will stand

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — The prosecutors who put Bill Cosby away say they're confident the conviction at his suburban Philadelphia sexual-assault retrial will stand. Kristen Feden and Stewart Ryan spoke to The Associated Press on Saturday about the nearly three-year journey from reopening the case to last Thursday's verdict and how they restructured their approach after last year's hung jury. An accuser's story that Cosby drugged and molested her in 2004 was supported by those of other women who said he violated them, too. Читать дальше...

Giants manager Bruce Bochy says Pablo Sandoval might pitch again

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Nick Hundley was catching his 6,610th big-league inning, Pablo Sandoval was pitching his first, and the Panda actually shook off one of Hundley's signs. "He should have. Did you see the score?" Hundley said with a huge grin Sunday. “We'd given up 15 runs before that, so obviously the signs weren't very good." Hundley called for a curveball. Sandoval wanted to throw a fastball. Somewhere in the ether Lou Brown from "Major League" was yelling with gravelly voice, "Give him the heater... Читать дальше...

Correction: Obit-Larry Harvey story

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In a story April 28 about the death of Larry Harvey, the founder of the celebration known as "Burning Man," The Associated Press reported erroneously that he arrived in San Francisco in 1965 at age 17. His brother, Stewart Harvey, says Larry Harvey went to San Francisco during the summers of 1967 and 1968, but did not move there until 1974. The story also erroneously reported the year of the Summer of Love; it was 1967, not 1965.

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SEOUL — Keeping diplomatic developments coming at a rapid pace, the South Korean government said Sunday that North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, had told President Moon Jae-in that he would abandon his nuclear weapons if the United States agreed to formally end the Korean War and promise not to invade his country. In a confidence-building gesture before a proposed summit meeting with President Trump, a suddenly loquacious and conciliatory Kim also said he would invite experts and... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

(Spoiler alert: Do not read ahead unless you’ve seen “Westworld” through last Sunday’s Season 2 premiere.) Lawrence (Clifton Collins Jr.) and the Man in Black (Ed Harris) had a close-knit relationship in Season 1 of “Westworld.” Literally, in that Harris’ character actually dragged the Host around with a rope for the first few episodes of HBO sci-fi series while he went in search of “The Maze.” That relationship came to an awkward end when the MIB decided to kill Lawrence to save Teddy (James Marsden) might get him to his goal faster. ‘Solo’ Featurette Teases Look at Daily Life in the Galactic Empire (Video)

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The next film in the “Star Wars” anthology, “Solo,” will go inside the dystopian daily life faced by those living under the Empire; a life that gave rise to one of the most famous rebels of them all, Han Solo. The new featurette released by Lucasfilm on Sunday shows a gritty, hazy world, where rifle-touting Stormtroopers watch over huddled masses trudging their way through space ports. The sterility of the Empire’s ships in the original trilogy is nowhere to be seen, nor are the colorful realms of the prequels. Читать дальше...

Golden Gate Bridge directors have decided to replicate the slender, curved Art Deco look of the span’s light poles on a new overhead toll gantry that will be built over the southbound lanes of traffic near the administration building to electronically collect tolls. The Friday vote for the design, one of three being considered, was unanimous. The others mimicked the bridge’s main cable and the rounded shape of the landmark’s former tollbooth, which has been taken out of service. A toll gantry... Читать дальше...

Report: Push for wind energy could create thousands of jobs

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

BOSTON (AP) — The planned creation of 1,600 megawatts of offshore wind power should create over 3,000 "job years" during construction over the next ten years and generate between $675 million and $800 million in direct economic output in Massachusetts. That's the conclusion of a report released this week by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, a state economic development agency. A job year is defined as one person working full-time for one year. In 2016, Governor Baker signed a bipartisan energy... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago federal judge has sentenced the former president of a Florida-based financial firm to a decade in prison in connection with a $179 million loan scheme. Federal prosecutors in Chicago say Timothy G. Fisher was president of First Farmers Financial LLC when the company sold more than two dozen non-existent loans to a Milwaukee investment firm. Documents given to the Milwaukee firm falsely make it look like the loans were guaranteed in part by the federal government. The Milwaukee company suffered a $179 million loss. Читать дальше...
