«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SAO BERNARDO DO CAMPO, Brazil — Former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva defied an order to turn himself in to police on Friday as he hunkered down with supporters at a metallurgical union that was the spiritual birthplace of his rise to power. The once wildly popular leader, who rose from poverty to lead Latin America’s largest nation, had until 5 p.m. local time to present himself to police in the city of Curitiba to begin serving a sentence of 12 years and one month for a corruption conviction. Two bills approved by the state Senate — one taxing certain internet sales and another expanding tribal gambling — will be sent to Gov. Mary Fallin, who will decide whether to sign the revenue-raising plans into law. Oklahoma Education... Читать дальше...

Governors could be powerless to deny Trump troop request

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — President Donald Trump's plan to deploy National Guard troops to the border with Mexico has drawn resistance from some governors, most of them Democrats, but they could be powerless to deny the commander in chief's request for soldiers. Governors have some leeway to say no presidents, but if Trump uses a federal law to order the deployment, the matter could be out of the governors' hands. The statute known as "Title 10 duty status" establishes that National Guard personnel operate... Читать дальше...

The plan has drawn resistance from several Democratic governors and one Republican governor. A spokesman for Gov. Chris Sununu said Friday sending troops will depend "on the details of the specific request." Sununu is the first Republican governor not to publicly take a position on the plan. Читать дальше...

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Emails show that Iowa Finance Authority Director David Jamison requested a friendly get-together with longtime ally Gov. Kim Reynolds, just days before she fired him for alleged sexual harassment. The records released Friday underscore how swiftly Reynolds acted to terminate Jamison, with whom she'd had a working relationship dating back two decades, once her staff learned of the allegations. But they don't shed light on the nature of Jamison's alleged misconduct, which the... Читать дальше...

‘You Were Never Really Here’ Film Review: Stylish Psychological Thriller Falls a Bit Short on Substance

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

At this point, the winkingly irreverent shaggy-dog potboiler is as firmly established a genre as the hard-boiled stories it tries to subvert. Robert Altman kicked things off with 1973’s “The Long Goodbye,” his riff on a bewildered Philip Marlowe in the Age of Aquarius, and the Coens later took that baton and ran it up to summit of Cult Film Mountain with “The Big Lebowski,” leaving plenty of imitators trailing behind and inspiring plenty more in the two decades since.

KHUZAA, Gaza Strip — Thousands of Palestinians protested along Gaza’s sealed border with Israel on Friday, engulfing the volatile area in black smoke from burning tires to try to block the view of Israeli snipers and cheering a Hamas strongman who pledged that the border fence will eventually fall. Israeli troops opened fire from across the border, killing seven Palestinians and wounding 293 others in the second mass border protest in a week, Gaza health officials said. Hundreds more suffered other injuries... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SEOUL — Park Geun-hye, South Korea’s impeached and ousted president, was sentenced Friday to 24 years in prison on a variety of criminal charges, in a case that exposed the entrenched, collusive ties between South Korea’s government and conglomerates like Samsung. A three-judge panel at the Seoul Central District Court also ordered Park to pay $17 million in fines, in a ruling that marked a climactic moment in an influence-peddling scandal that shook the country’s political and business worlds. ‘Atlanta’ Shock: Donald Glover Plays Michael Jackson-Like Character in Whiteface

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

“Atlanta” is full of surprises, but Thursday’s episode delivered the biggest: Creator and star Donald Glover, in whiteface, played a character who bore an eerie resemblance to Michael Jackson. Glover isn’t credited with playing the Jackson-like character, a sad, high-voiced musician named Teddy Perkins who lives in almost total isolation. In fact, Teddy is listed in the credits as playing himself. But fans and critics quickly figured out what was going on. Vulture’s Matt Zoller Seitz said Perkins... Читать дальше...

In a new essay for The New Yorker,  Ringwald wrote, “It’s hard for me to understand how [director] John Hughes was able to write with so much sensitivity, and also have such a glaring blind spot.” “I thought about it again this past fall, after a number of women came forward with... «SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Skripal and his daughter Yulia were found unconscious on a bench in the English city of Salisbury on March 4 and were taken to a hospital, where for weeks they lay unconscious in critical condition. 1 Gun control: A federal judge in Boston on Friday dismissed a lawsuit challenging Massachusetts’ ban on assault weapons. U.S. District Judge William Young ruled that assault weapons and large capacity magazines banned by the state in a 1998 law fall outside the scope of the “personal right to ‘bear arms’ under the Second Amendment.” The lawsuit was filed last year by the Gun Owners Action League of Massachusetts and other groups who said the law infringed on their rights.
