Pompeo vows to confront Russia, dodges Mueller questions

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Aiming to quell concerns before what is likely to be a narrow confirmation vote, Secretary of State-designate Mike Pompeo vowed on Thursday to ramp up efforts against Russia in "each place we confront them." But he ducked and dodged when asked whether he supports President Donald Trump's pounding criticism of the federal investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Pompeo, now Trump's CIA chief, tread carefully when confronted with several of the president's controversial and undiplomatic statements... Читать дальше...

He’s not the only one. So is Cardinal head coach Tara VanDerveer, whose team could be back in the Final Four despite losing leading scorer Brittany McPhee and leading rebounder Kaylee Johnson. But reinforcements are on the way. With the twins starting for four years... Читать дальше...

Tabloid paid for, killed, salacious Trump tip

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

NEW YORK — Eight months before the company that owns the National Enquirer paid $150,000 to a former Playboy Playmate who claimed she’d had an affair with Donald Trump, the tabloid’s parent made a $30,000 payment to a less famous individual: a former doorman at one of the real estate mogul’s New York City buildings. As it did with the ex-Playmate, the Enquirer signed the ex-doorman to a contract that effectively prevented him from going public with a juicy tale that might hurt Trump’s campaign for president. The Belleville News Democrat reports that the measure Thursday received four "yes" votes, three "no" votes and one abstention from trustees. The first phase would have sent an additional $5.1 million to the Edwardsville campus for fiscal year 2019. It also would have included a study to devise a new... Читать дальше...

Who'll follow Paul Ryan as speaker? Contest hums below radar

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Some say it's a fight between West and South. Or who might win an endorsement from President Donald Trump. Or a test of who can woo conservatives. But one thing was clear Thursday: Any maneuvering in the brewing showdown between California Rep. Kevin McCarthy and Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise for House speaker was occurring below the radar, and the leading players were choosing their words carefully. "I've heard from none of the candidates, and all of the mentioned candidates are not just friends... Читать дальше...

Trump, aides ponder Syria response; Mattis cites risks

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Thursday that a U.S. attack on Syria could happen "very soon or not so soon at all," while Defense Secretary Jim Mattis warned such an attack carried the risk of spinning out of control, suggesting caution ahead of a final decision on the response to an attack last weekend that U.S. officials are increasingly certain involved the use of banned chemical weapons. Although Mattis noted that military action carried risks, he also emphasized that Syrian use of chemical weapons should not be tolerated. Читать дальше...

National Park Service drops plan for $40 fee hike — $5 instead

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The National Park Service is abandoning its plan to more than double entrance fees at parks after a major public backlash, announcing Thursday it will proceed with a much more modest price increase. Starting June 1, the cost of a seven-day vehicle pass at major parks like Yosemite will increase by $5, park officials said. The parks now charge between $15 and $30 for admission. Yosemite’s entrance fee will rise to $35. Last year, Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke... Читать дальше...

‘Empire of Guns,’ by Priya Satia

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

One hundred years ago, amid armed combat around the world, Randolph Bourne, a contributing editor at the New Republic, proclaimed that “war is essentially the health of the State.” The moment a government declares war, Bourne wrote, the vast majority of its citizens identify with its purposes. The state, now “an august presence, walks through their imaginations” and becomes “the inexorable arbiter and determinant” of attitudes and opinions. As the masses allow themselves “to be regimented, coerced... Читать дальше...

‘Roseanne’ Revival Got Big Influx of Fox News Viewers in Second Week

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

While “Roseanne” has lost some viewers from its staggeringly well-rated premiere, the ABC sitcom has attracted a big influx in Fox News fans since returning to broadcast. An analysis by Samba TV found that between Week 1 and Week 2 of the revived series, the largest declines in viewership came from households who also watch younger-skewing networks — MTV2, Teen Nick, Cartoon Network, for examples — or channels targeting African American viewers, like BET, OWN, and TV One. Conversely, the Week 2... Читать дальше...

Anti-Trump 'resistance warriors' insist on liberal message

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Do not ask the "resistance warriors" to water down their message. No, with control of Congress and statehouses across the nation at stake, the liberal candidates who packed into a Washington hotel ballroom Thursday are convinced they will win in this fall's midterm elections only by embracing the passions and policies of the Democratic Party's far left flank. "In this moment in American history, our job together is to stand up. It is to fight back," Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders declared in an afternoon speech. Читать дальше...

LONDON (AP) — Britain's Cabinet gave Prime Minister Theresa May the green light Thursday to join the United States and France in planning possible military strikes in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria. But the Cabinet's call for "action" to prevent further use of chemical weapons included no details on the method or timing of such strikes, while leaving open the possibility of other responses. Senior government ministers were summoned back from a spring break to discuss the attack last week in Douma... Читать дальше...

WESTBROOK, Maine (AP) — A Maine high school student who fled his native country of Zambia last year is suing the National Endowment for the Arts because it will not let him compete in the national "Poetry Out Loud" contest. Westbrook resident 17-year-old Allan Monga, a junior at Deering High School, won Maine's contest, but says he's not being allowed to compete nationally because he hasn't yet been granted legal asylum.
