A’s Bruce Maxwell won’t kneel for anthem this season
MESA, Ariz. - The A’s most in-the-news player, Bruce Maxwell, was among those at Hohokam Stadium when pitchers and catchers reported on Tuesday, and while he downplayed some of the league issues he’s facing, the team’s starting catcher did provide a headline:
Maxwell, who last September became the first and to date only major-league player to kneel for the national anthem, said he will stand for the anthem this year. He reiterated Tuesday that he kneeled last year in order to protest mistreatment of African Americans by law enforcement.
“Obviously, I didn’t take that lightly,” Maxwell said of his decision to kneel last fall.
