Frederick W. Ryan – Great historian and even greater visionary

Times of Malta

On July 9, 1938, British Governor Sir Charles Bonham-Carter, sitting in the Palace, received a visitor who needled him no end. Frederick W. Ryan came to waste his precious time with “his dreams for a great university in Malta to act as a Mediterranean centre of learning and as a bridge between Europe and Africa and to train Maltese for the service of the Empire”. In his private diary, the Governor pooh-poohed the deluded visionary with a curt “dreams... quite impractical”. That turned out to be... Читать дальше...

An intense experience

Times of Malta

As the first waves of music from Rub Al Khali, the title track of Brikkuni’s new album, hit my eardrums, I got the same shiver down my spine as I did when I was in attendance at Brikkuni’s already infamous Għaram concert at the Manoel Theatre over a year ago. That concert introduced me and many others to a new Brikkuni, one we knew was in the works, but whose form we did not clearly know yet. That concert was a runaway success for the band and, though they have once more courted many a controversy since then... Читать дальше...

Pharmacists in ‘conscientious objection’ to morning-after pill

Times of Malta

A number of individual pharmacists are refusing to dispense the morning-after pill on moral grounds, it has emerged, even though the emergency contraceptive is stocked in the pharmacies where they work. The pharmacists are either directing customers to other pharmacies where they will not have a problem purchasing the pill or else telling them to return to the same pharmacy another time when another “sympathetic” pharmacist will be on duty. Opposition to present bill for removal of precautionary warrants against journalists

Times of Malta

The Opposition is tomorrow presenting a bill in Parliament for the removal of precautionary warrants against journalists, PN leader Simon Busuttil said. Addressing a big crowd in Sliema, Dr Busuttil spoke on the Chris Cardona brothel scandal saying the Economy Minister had taken an “extreme and savage measure” by requesting the courts to issue precautionary warrants against Daphne Caruana Galizia. Dr Cardona’s actions were a clear threat to free speech, which was unacceptable in a democracy, Dr Busuttil said. Читать дальше...

Sugar and cancer ties

Times of Malta

We’ve seen and heard a lot in the media recently about sugar. It is interesting that the focus has shifted from fats. I don’t intend to follow the herd and discuss sugar in the same way. However, I will look at sugar in relation to cancer. Several new landmark studies into the causes and progression of cancer suggest that it is an everyday occurrence that is a contributing factor. This puts the suggestion of ‘bad luck’, as circulated by a medical person last year, to bed. We do need to look at our lifestyles. Читать дальше...

Legg Calvé-Perthes: a hip joint disease

Times of Malta

This week, Gretel was diagnosed with a disease that is common to dogs and even humans. Gretel is an eight-month-old teacup Yorkshire terrier with a lovely temperament. Her owners brought her to the clinic because they had become increasingly concerned about her mobility. A few weeks ago, they noticed a slight limp when she walked, but because it happened intermittently, they had dismissed it as growing pains. However, lately, her limp and discomfort had increased considerably. After giving Gretel... Читать дальше...

Anti-money-laundering agency workers still clueless about new head

Times of Malta

Employees of Malta’s anti-money-laundering agency, which investigated the country’s connection to the Panama Papers, are still in the dark about who will be taking over as their new head following the departure of Manfred Galdes last August. Despite an announcement by Finance Minister Edward Scicluna more than three weeks ago that the new person to head the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit (FIAU) had been chosen, no one has been told who it is, one employee said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. In pursuit of the Northern lights

Times of Malta

During her 1,400km car journey round the unpredictable Icelandic ring road, Christine Spiteri captures the contrasting dynamic and still landscape of Europe’s most sparsely populated island. We ventured to Iceland on a whim. All it took to convince us were a couple of ill-referenced blog posts illustrated with a collage of pretty pictures. It was only weeks later, when our Lonely Planet guide arrived, that the reality of what we were about to experience on the fringes of the Arctic, in December... Читать дальше...

Digging deep or staying superficial?

Times of Malta

There are a few distinct ways you could interpret the antonyms ‘superficial’ and ‘deep’. It could be generally regarded as something positive and desirable to be described as someone deep, and perhaps much less so to be described as someone who is superficial. Being deep implies one is somehow more in touch with one’s intellect or emotions, is able to extensively understand one’s self, as well as others. To be superficial on the other hand suggests one is unable to understand matters of the mind or spirit in any meaningful way... Читать дальше...

A massive evacuation has begun in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki so experts can defuse a 500lbs unexploded Second World War bomb. An estimated 75,000 people are being evacuated in a nearly 2km radius. The bomb, dropped during an air raid in the 1940s, was found this month during work to expand storage tanks under a gas station. Nine unruly students moved from Ħamrun secondary as school rejects ‘ghetto’ label

Times of Malta

Nine students from the Ħamrun secondary school have been moved to specialised support programmes as the education authorities react to teachers’ concerns over unruly behaviour. Maria McNamara, director general for education, said the nine children will be given dedicated support to help them deal with behavioural issues. But she insisted this was not a reflection of the vast majority of students who attended the school, which forms part of the San Ġorġ Preca college. The school was last week described... Ħamrun secondary school is no ghetto, headmistress insists

Times of Malta

The Ħamrun secondary school has been in the news for the wrong reasons, but its head, Doriann Portanier Mifsud, tells Kurt Sansone there is a brighter side to the bleak picture that has been painted. The colourful corridors at the Ħamrun secondary school are lit up by the afternoon sun shining through the glass facade in the foyer. As I step inside my childhood school, it feels warmer and brighter than how I left it 25 years ago, when it was one of a handful of boys’ junior lyceums. Only last week... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

Pirelli had to cut short a Formula One wet tyre test at Ferrari’s Fiorano track in Italy on Friday after four times world champion Sebastian Vettel crashed into barriers the day before. A Pirelli spokesman said the modified 2015 Ferrari had been badly damaged in the crash on the artificially-soaked circuit outside Maranello and spare parts were not immediately available. Reports in Italy said Vettel had suffered some bruising but was otherwise unhurt. The two-day test of the new wider tyres had been scheduled for just one car... Читать дальше...

The best gift I have ever given my son

Times of Malta

I invited my son Tristan to a father-son power weekend to discover and celebrate his gifts, strengths and talents. This weekend not just redefined him, it affirmed our mission together and inspired us to hold a workshop for other fathers and sons who want to grow and play together. This is our story. Like so many other young boys, I grew up with the illusion that I was not quite good, strong, fast, skilled or clever enough. I felt mediocre, but never great. Secretly I dreamt that one day my dad would... Читать дальше...

Robust China trade data a boon for Asia as protectionist risks loom

Times of Malta

China posted much stronger-than-expected trade data for January as demand picked up at home and abroad, an encouraging start to 2017 for the world’s largest trading nation even as Asia braces for a rise in US protectionism under President Donald Trump. Trump criticised China, Japan and Germany last week, saying the three key US trading partners were engaged in devaluing their currencies to the harm of US companies and consumers. But he has not followed through yet on threats to label China a currency... Читать дальше...

Borja Valero inspired Fiorentina back to winning ways with a 3-0 victory over Udinese at Stadio Artemio Franchi.
