Binge-eating disorder can be treated using therapy or drugs

Times of Malta

People with recurring episodes of binge-eating can be helped with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or medication, according to a new review of previous studies. People with binge-eating disorder have brief, psychologically distressing binge-eating episodes multiple times a week for at least three months. The disorder is linked to mental health problems, chronic pain, obesity and diabetes, the researchers write in Annals of Internal Medicine, online. Binge-eating disorder will affect about three... Germany desperate to rewrite the history books against Italy

Times of Malta

Germany are determined to snap their tournament losing streak to Italy dating back almost half a century when the two meet in a Euro 2016 quarter-final on Saturday in Bordeaux, their players said yesterday. The world champions have lost to Italy in every single tournament knockout match they have played against them, starting from a 1970 World Cup semi-final. They also lost the 1982 World Cup final, a 2006 World Cup semi-final in Germany and a Euro 2012 semi-final to them. The Germans, four times World Cup winners like the Italians... Читать дальше...

Bale braced for Wales’s biggest test in half a century

Times of Malta

Gareth Bale has branded Wales’s Euro 2016 clash with Belgium tomorrow as the country’s biggest game in more than 50 years. Chris Coleman’s side, the only one of the home nations left in France in their first major tournament since 1958, take on Belgium for a place in the last four. Bale, who has scored three goals in their four games so far, said the game was Wales’s biggest since losing to Brazil in the 1958 World Cup. He said: “We know about the quarter-final in the World Cup in 1958, so since... Читать дальше...

Kim adds new title to his list

Times of Malta

North Korea's parliament has awarded leader Kim Jong Un a new post, adding to his long list of titles. The North's state-run television KRT released a video of Kim attending its Supreme People's Assembly and said Kim was appointed as the chairman of the State Affairs Commission of Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), which appears to be newly formed and whose function was not immediately clear. He also has the titles of the Dear Respected Comrade Kim Jong Un, Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea... Читать дальше...

De Rossi unlikely to play for Italy in quarter-final

Times of Malta

Italy midfielder Daniele De Rossi looks unlikely to face Germany in Saturday’s Euro 2016 quarter-final because of a bruised thigh. De Rossi was taken off early in the second half of Monday’s 2-0 win over Spain and team doctor Enrico Castellacci said yesterday that he had taken a severe knock. “He is working very hard, we are doing everything for him to recover and we can’t give a time-frame but we are aware that the problem is serious,” he said. Midfielder Antonio Candreva’s groin strain has also not recovered enough for him to return... Читать дальше...

Ronaldo poses biggest threat yet to the Poland rearguard

Times of Malta

Poland have an impressive defensive record at Euro 2016 but standing in their way to a semi-final spot is arguably one of sport’s greatest-ever athletes, Cristiano Ronaldo. The monstrous Polish centre-back pairing of Michal Pazdan and Kamil Glik face their toughest challenge yet when they come up against Portugal in the last-eight clash in Marseille tonight, though their previous matches have not provided much by way of preparation for facing the Real Madrid star. Describing 29-year-old Ronaldo as the “perfect athlete”... Читать дальше...

Iceland now want Leicester City-type ending to their run

Times of Malta

Surprise Euro 2016 quarter-finalists Iceland want a fairytale ending to their run, like the one that Leicester City enjoyed when they stunned the soccer world by clinching the Premier League title this season, team coaches said yesterday. Leicester, with no big names in the squad, finished ahead of far more illustrious English clubs in what was one of the biggest upsets in club football. Iceland, in their first major tournament, have already taken the competition by storm, advancing past the group... Читать дальше...

Both governments have been informed and an official ceremony featuring fan groups from both teams will take place in the next few days, the statement added. Ireland and... Читать дальше...

Maltese language standards

Times of Malta

Our language is one of the most powerful forces uniting and identifying us as a nation. Its survival is probably our largest claim to a distinctly Maltese identity. Why is it then that successive reports, and our own daily experience of the use of the Maltese language, raise so much concern about standards of both spoken and written Maltese? The Maltese language examiners’ report by the Matsec board analysed the performance of more than 4,000 students who sat for last year’s Secondary Education Certificate... Читать дальше...

Cautious Spiteri hopes to ‘play his cards well’ against Neftchi

Times of Malta

Prudence is the name of the game for Balzan coach Oliver Spiteri in the lead-up to the home clash with Azeri team Neftchi Baku in the Europa League first qualifying round first leg at the Hibs Stadium today (kick-off: 6pm). Spiteri believes that Balzan are better equipped to cope with the demands of continental football after making their European debut last year but warned that Neftchi Baku will be a very hard nut to crack. “In football, you have to be realistic,” Spiteri replied when asked about Balzan’s chances. Hibs, Birkirkara target ‘away’ tonic

Times of Malta

Hibernians and Birkirkara have a common target ahead of their Europa League first qualifying round first legs against Slovakia’s Spartak Trnava and NK Siroki Brijeg, of Bosnia, this evening. Both Maltese teams will be chasing a positive result in away matches to keep the qualification issue open ahead of the second legs next week when Hibernians and Birkirkara will have home advantage. Spartak Trnava, who finished fourth in their domestic championship last season, don’t evoke happy memories for Hibs as... Читать дальше...

Last bastion of morality

Times of Malta

A person I am very fond of likes to answer me as follows when I complain about Malta’s drawbacks: “Malta sui generis” (Latin for ‘of its own kind, in a class by itself’). And indeed we are in a class of our own. We deludedly see ourselves as the defenders of morality and life. Some of us even claim to have a better understanding of life than anyone else beyond our golden shores, including reputed doctors and scientists the world over. We go as far as feeling morally entitled to criminalise people at different levels of need or even despair... Читать дальше...

Elvis’s first guitarist dies

Times of Malta

Scotty Moore, the pioneering rock guitarist whose sharp, graceful style helped Elvis Presley shape his revolutionary sound and inspired a generation of musicians that included Keith Richards, Jimmy Page and Bruce Springsteen, has died on Tuesday at 84. Moore died in his home in Nashville, his biographer and friend James Dickerson said. The member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was the last survivor of a combo that included Presley, bassist Bill Black and producer Sam Phillips. “Elvis loved Scotty... Читать дальше...

Southgate set to be England temporary manager – media

Times of Malta

England under-21 coach Gareth Southgate looks likely to be put in temporary charge of the national team after the resignation of Roy Hodgson following the side’s Euro 2016 exit, British media reported yesterday. “Southgate is believed to have already been asked whether he is prepared to take over on a temporary basis and has indicated that he is,” the Daily Telegraph said. A three-man English FA panel has begun the job of finding a successor to Hodgson, who resigned in the wake of England’s humiliating... Читать дальше...

Why Cameron went wrong

Times of Malta

Quite rightly, David Cameron, Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and Nigel Farage are taking the brunt of the blame for the folly that is Brexit. One can imagine a different Conservative leader who would not have risked his country’s stability in order to solve a tactical internal party problem. Without the mendacity and dissimulation of Johnson, Gove and Farage, Leave would not have won. But it is one thing to blame. It is another to explain and understand. If we are to understand why Cameron embarked on the course he did some four years ago ... Читать дальше...
