Switzerland follow France through to last 16 with 0-0 draw

Times of Malta

Switzerland followed France through to the last 16 of Euro 2016 by holding the host nation to a 0-0 draw in their final Group A match after the unlucky French hit the woodwork three times. France had the best chances in a lively first half but the intensity then dropped, with both sides looking happy with a result that means Les Bleus win the group with seven points from three games ahead of the Swiss in second two points back. Paul Pogba, criticised for his first two outings, stepped up a gear and hit the bar twice before the break. Читать дальше...

Living off the fat of public land

Times of Malta

Xwejni Bay is a picturesque inlet just off Marsalforn where salt is still produced from the pens cut out in the rocks. The idyllic setting provides a perfect getaway, but it could have been a different story had the Borg Olivier government of 1969 not denied a development grant to the Pisani brothers. It was a time when the Borg Olivier administration was trying to diversify the economy and encourage a fledgling tourism industry by giving hoteliers favourable terms and public land on the cheap. The model worked... Читать дальше...

Can a child know that they are transgender?

Times of Malta

Can a child possibly be sure that he or she inhabits ‘the wrong body’? Philip Leone-Ganado explores the issue following the controversy surrounding eight-year-old transgender girl Willa. The much-publicised advances in Malta’s gender identity law have made it possible for transgender children to be recognised and live their lives with a gender identity that does not correspond to their biological sex – but to many, the notion of a young child making that sort of decision is instinctively an uncomfortable one. Times of Malta

Mayoral run-offs in Rome, Milan and other big Italian cities are under the spotlight to see how Premier Matteo Renzi's Democratic Party fares. The contenders in the Italian capital are Renzi-backed Roberto Giachetti and the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement's candidate, Virginia Raggi, who could become Rome's first woman mayor.
