Picture of divers posing with great white shark is 'more than a year old'

A picture posted on Facebook showing a group of Maltese divers posting with what appears to be a dead great white shark has caused uproar. The photo shows three men in wetsuits and another individual posing with the shark.  Diver Shaun Farrell told Times of Malta the photo is more than a year old. "We were in Libya and we found the creature dead as it was washed ashore. Russia snatch injury-time equaliser to draw with England; fans attacked after match

Russia stunned England by scoring an injury-time equaliser to force a 1-1 draw in their Euro 2016 Group B match after Roy Hodgson's men had dominated. Denis Glushakov was credited with the goal after the defence were caught napping as Russia launched a long ball into the area. Updated 10.30pm with Cardona reaction Chris Cardona will be Labour’s new deputy leader for party affairs after winning the majority of the delegates’ votes today. In a run off with Owen Bonnici, the Economy Minister polled obtained 389 votes or 53.4 per cent of the votes. Dr Bonnici won 339 votes. A total of 737 or the 763 delegates voted in today’s election. Watch: Tear gas used as England fans are embroiled in third day of violence

Updated 7pm: Marseille descended into violent chaos once again as England fans were involved in a third day of fighting. Fist fights and bottle throwing broke out between the supporters and their Russian and French counterparts in Marseille's Old Port. Broken glass lay strewn across the square as the police fired tear gas into the crowds causing them to run. Fans were seen being beaten to the floor and repeatedly kicked in the head. Police water cannon arrived to try to control the fighting as they struggled to hold back the different groups.

Passport scheme details refused 'to protect relations with countries of origin'

Information on the origin of those buying Maltese passports and becoming citizens of Malta is not being released as it could “prejudice relations with some countries of origin”, the Times of Malta was told. Rejecting yet another request by this newspaper for details under the Freedom of Information Act, Identity Malta gave “relations with the countries of origin” as the reason for such refusal. Party leaders attend Gay Pride in Valletta

Hundreds of people attended the Gay Pride parade in Valletta, which drew all party leaders in a rare show of unified support.  Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, Opposition leader Simon Busuttil, Alternattiva Demokratika chairman Arnold Cassola and Marlene Farrugia, acting leader of the new Democratic Party were in attendance.  They walked along Republic Street, accompanied by party floats and several Gay Pride flags, in a parade led by two macho men riding motorbikes.

Sliema parking scheme would hurt workers, GWU warns

A residential parking scheme in Sliema would put pressure on workers and businesses in the locality, the General Workers' Union has warned.  While it acknowledged the parking problem in Sliema, the GWU said any introduction of a residential parking scheme should only be done after a holistic study which takes into consideration the "constant economic development" in the locality.  The Sliema council has warned it will file court action against the Ministry of Transport after the locality's residents' parking scheme was stopped. All eyes are on the Labour Party headquarters today as delegates choose the party's next deputy leader.  Owen Bonnici and Chris Cardona are facing off in a second round vote to determine who will be the deputy leader for party affairs, after Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi was eliminated in a vote last night. Dr Zrinzo Azzopardi was eliminated after finishing third in the vote, with his 213 votes falling just shy of Dr Bonnici's 224. Motorcyclist injured in Kalkara accident

A 30-year-old motorcyclist was seriously injured this morning following a collision with a car in Kalkara.  The police said the incident took place in Triq il-Missjoni Taljana at 11am. The man's Triumph motorbike collided with a Ford Ka, driven by a 24-year-old woman. Both are from Kalkara. An ambulance rushed the man to hospital where he was certified to be suffering from grievous injuries but was not in critical condition. The police are investigating.

Rising chance of Brexit - polls, odds indicate

Betting odds on a British vote to exit the European Union narrowed today after an opinion poll gave the "Leave" camp a double-digit lead over "Remain." The implied probability of a vote to stay in the EU in a June 23 referendum fell to 70 per cent from 78 per cent earlier this week, according to odds supplied by bookmaker Betfair. Bulldog left tied to door in bad condition dies; action to be taken against owner

The Animal Welfare Department will be taking action against the owner of a bulldog which died after being left bound to a residential door close to the Ħamrun parish church. The government said in a statement the Animal Welfare Department received a report about the dog and when they arrived on scene, the officers noted it was in such a bad condition it could barely breath. Blackout caused by monkey

A three-hour nationwide blackout in Kenya was found to have been caused by a monkey, the national power company said. The Kenya Electricity Generation Company said a wandering primate climbed on to the roof of Gitaru Power Station in central Kenya and fell on to a transformer, tripping it. The company said this caused other machines in the station to trip, resulting in the loss of 180MW from the plant, triggering a national blackout.
