Amazon to launch music streaming service

Amazon is preparing to launch a standalone music streaming subscription service, placing it squarely in competition with rival offerings from Apple and Spotify, according to two people with knowledge of the matter. The service will be offered at $9.99 per month, in line with major rivals, and it will offer a competitive catalogue of songs, the sources said. Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump by 11 points in the US presidential race, showing little change after she became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee this week, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released today. The online poll, conducted from Monday to Friday, shows 46 per cent of likely voters support Clinton while 34.8 per cent back Trump. Another 19.2 per cent support neither candidate. EU signs trade deal with six African countries

The European Union today signed a trade deal giving six African nations unlimited access to the economic bloc. Known as the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), the deal was signed off by EU Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström and trade ministers from Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland and South Africa. De Gea denies links to prostitution case

Spain goalkeeper David De Gea today said press reports linking him to a prostitution case currently under investigation in Spain were false and he would not leave the Spanish squad. Earlier today, some UK-based media outlets had claimed that De Gea had been sent home and would not be part of Spain's Euro 2016 squad. "It is all a lie. Tourism stakeholders meet with minister to discuss Air Malta

'Mr Hockey' Gordie Howe dead at 88

Gordie Howe, known as "Mr. Hockey" for a tough but skillful playing style that shattered records over a long career that wove him into the national fabric of hockey-mad Canada, has died at the age of 88. Vandals burn 220 hives containing 250,000 bees

Vandals destroyed 220 beekeeping hives containing 250,000 bees in the area between Għarb and Għasri in Gozo in the past days. The hives were set alight and damage has been estimated at €12,000.  Farming parliamentary secretary Roderick Galdes condemned the vandalism, saying it was both an attack on a private business as well as an environmental crime. He called on anyone with information about the act of vandalism to contact police.

Prison is better than Mt Carmel, tearful man tells court

A 42-year-old man begged the court to send him to prison instead of Mount Carmel Hospital after he was arraigned in court with threatening his wife. The man, who cannot be named by court order, was charged with harassing and threatening his wife and breaching bail and a protection order. It is understood that he had declared that he had nothing left in life but to kill his wife. European Commission calls for a new migration deal with third countries has Malta's full backing, Home Affairs minister Carmelo Abela said today.  Dr Abela said the initiative was a step in the right direction and "could signal a turning point in collaborative and productive engagement with countries of origin and transit."  The Commission communication sets out a vision for migration compact agreements with key migratory countries, including increased engagement with Libya and Tunisia. The head of the government’s financial intelligence agency yesterday questioned the lack of police prosecutions involving such crimes. Addressing a conference titled ‘Combating financial crime: protecting Malta’s economy,’ Manfred Galdes, director of the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit, said it was strange the police only seemed to prosecute domestic financial crime when there was a lot of international business flowing through the island. Don't be fooled by trick website, warns MFSA

Consumers who were lured to www.kbceuro.com have been warned by the Malta Financial Services Authority to be vigilant.  The MFSA said that the site was miseleading the public by using a similar name to that of a genuine licenced firm.  It alerted the public that www.kbceuro.com is not licenced or authorised by the MFSA.  The website has already been taken offline. Men lent money at 125 per cent interest, court hears

Two men were charged with usury and threatening an 18-year-old man and his mother today.  Simon Anthony Robert Tartaglia, 33 from the UK and Timothy Dennis Bonello, 18 from St Paul's Bay pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Joe Mifsud to the charges brought against him. Prosecuting officer Maurice Curmi told the court that the two accused had lent the victim €200, which went up to €450 within the space of a month. Malta to host HIV technical meeting next year

Malta is to host a Europe-wide meeting on HIV prevention and mitigation strategies during its six-month stint as president of the European Council next year.  Health Minister Chris Fearne made the announcement while addressing the UN assembly in New York.  The meeting will be organised in collaboration with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and will bring together various technical experts to see how Europe can best achieve the sustainable development goals set during the World Health Assembly. Man caught begging and stealing refused bail

A 28-year-old man from Zabbar has been remanded in custody for begging and for committing a string of petty thefts. Rodrick Grima was charged with begging for money in Qormi, stealing a bicycle, handling stolen goods, fleeing from the Floriana Health Centre whilst under police custody, stealing from a vehicle parked in Qormi and relapsing. Prosecuting officer Roderick Agius told the court that the accused needed a lot of help but refused to acknowledge this fact. Brothers who scrapped with PA officers denied bail

The two owners of an illegal scrapyard alleged to have assaulted enforcement officers there to clear material yesterday were remanded in custody this afternoon.
