Ceiling panels on United Airlines plane fall during flight

Ceiling panels collapsed and fell into the aisle of a United Airlines plane when it made a hard landing at Newark’s Liberty International Airport. Passengers said the Boeing 767-300 ‘bounced’ on the runway before it took off again and circled for around 30 minutes.  No one was injured.

Boxing-Muhammad Ali in hospital with 'respiratory' issue

Boxing great Muhammad Ali is in hospital with a respiratory issue, a family spokesman said. Bob Gunnell said in a statement that Ali's condition was fair. A brief hospital stay was expected. Former heavyweight world champion Ali, 74, has been suffering from Parkinson's disease for more than three decades. Ali, who lives in Phoenix, Arizona, has suffered some health problems in recent years. He was admitted to hospital in December 2014 with what was believed to be a mild case of pneumonia. Doctors... Hospital outsources fillings due to staff shortage

Mater Dei Hospital’s dentistry department is operating with half its staff complement, forcing the authorities to farm out jobs to tackle the ever-increasing waiting list. The department currently has just 14 full-time dentists, down from the total of 30. Several patients – including children –have received letters from the department informing them that their appointments were being cancelled and that they would be contacted in due course. Man arrested on arrival from Sicily after drugs find

A 19-year-old Italian is under arrest after drugs were found in his possession when he disembarked from the ferry from Sicily. The Customs Department said its inspectors stopped the man last night. What is believed to be cannabis was found in a metal container while  51 capsules were found in luggage.

Billboards case was ‘overlooked by the PN’ - injunction may be withdrawn

A court order for PN billboards not to be removed by the Planning Authority risks being withdrawn as the PN “missed” a deadline to initiate proceedings according to law. The law lays down that an injunction must be followed up with a court case within 20 days. “The applicant is bound to bring the action in respect of the right stated in the warrant within 20 days from the issue of the warrant,” the law states. Updated - British Airways plane in security alert in New Jersey

A canine unit has found nothing suspicious during a sweep of a London-to-Newark flight after authorities received an unspecified threat. The British Airways flight carrying 206 passengers and 13 crew members arrived on Thursday afternoon at Newark Liberty International Airport in the US. A Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police spokesman said the crew is off the plane and passengers' bags are being rescreened. The plane was moved to a remote area of the airport after it landed.

Massive fire breaks out in iconic Mumbai building

A massive fire broke out in an iconic building in India's commercial capital, Mumbai. No casualties were immediately reported. The fire erupted in the Metro House building on the Colaba Causeway, a busy commercial street in south Mumbai, around 4 pm. Huge plumes of smoke and fire were seen billowing out of its top floors as fire fighters fought to control the blaze. Chief fire officer P.S. Number of migrant bodies recovered on Libyan coast rises to 85 - Red Crescent

The bodies of at least 85 migrants who drowned trying to cross the Mediterranean have been washed up near the western Libyan city of Zuwara, a Red Crescent official said. Al-Khamis Al-Bosaifi said most of the migrants appeared to be from sub-Saharan Africa, though their bodies were decomposed and it was not clear when they had drowned. A surge in departures from the North African coast towards Italy left hundreds dead last week. Many of the boats are believed to have left from the shore around Zuwara and the nearby city of Sabratha.



Prince died of an opioid overdose - official

Tests show that Prince died of an opioid overdose, a law enforcement official has told the Associated Press. The 57-year-old singer was found dead on April 21 at his Minneapolis-area estate. The findings confirm suspicions that opioids played a role in the musician's death. After he died, a law enforcement official revealed that investigators were examining whether an overdose was to blame and whether a doctor had prescribed him drugs in the preceding weeks. North Carolina woman finds body parts in used freezer

A resident of Goldsboro, North Carolina says she found body parts in a deep freezer she bought from her neighbour. The woman, who didn't want to be identified, says she was told not to open it for a few weeks. It was a time capsule, part of Sunday school project, she was told. "A church was supposed to come, pick up the items inside the freezer. I was supposed to get the freezer back. The church never came. Bank of Valletta is refusing to give details as to whether an ad hoc special early retirement arrangement given to former parliamentary secretary Michael Falzon remains or has been reviewed. BHS to close after no buyers found

Paris has shut down its underground metro line as water levels in the river Seine keep rising following days of rain. Staff at the Louvre museum have been told the venue will close tomorrow. Moose gives birth in Alaska car park

Shoppers at a hardware store in Anchorage, Alaska, were treated to an unusual sight  when a moose gave birth right in the middle of a parking lot. Local media said the mother and her calf rested for hours next to a parked jeep, though the little one appeared eager to test out its legs. Hawker charged with neighbour's attempted murder

A 36-year-old hawker is being held in custody after being accused of trying to murder his neighbour. The two came to blows in an apartment block in Dun Frans Camilleri Street, Hamrun, yesterday afternoon. Justin Mula, who was arraigned before Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona denied all charges but did not request bail. The victim suffered grievous injuries with a pointed object, which sources said was a scimitar.
