Government will continue to assist Muslim school

The government will continue to help the Mariam Al Batool Muslim school which was currently facing financial problems, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat promised this evening. He was addressing the Muslim Community at the Labour Party’s headquarters in Ħamrun on the occasion of the breaking of the fast. Dr Muscat said that all parties involved should work together to ensure that the school had a future. NGO proposing additional safeguards on ODZ projects

NGO Front Ħarsien ODZ has suggested further ways to deter projects on ODZ land. Reacting to a Nationalist Party suggestion last week that ODZ projects should be subject to two-thirds majority approval in Parliament, Front Ħarsien ODZ suggested a multitude of additional safeguards. In a statement, the NGO suggested that this two-thirds majority should be an additional safeguard only when the ODZ development was approved by the Planning Authority (PA) following a full and transparent planning process. Archaeological find delaying Baħrija works - minister

Transport Minister Joe Mizzi yesterday offered little hope for a quick solution to ongoing works to install sewage mains in Baħrija which led residents to take to the streets in protest last week. Valletta market renovation to be completed by end of next year

Renovations on the Valletta indoor market, known as the Suq tal-Belt, should be completed by the end of next year, the Arkadia group said yesterday. According to Arkadia general manager Antoine Portelli, the basement level of the Suq will serve as a food market, with fresh food outlets. 10-day jail term for 16-year-old who stole €35 confirmed

An Appeals Court has confirmed another court’s decision to sentence a 16-year-old boy to 10 days in jail for stealing €35, despite citing the punishment as “excessive” and of no help to his rehabilitation. The court noted it had no choice because the appeal was not filed according to law. Storm over Malta diverts flights, disrupts feasts, suspends fair

An unseasonal and unexpected storm over Malta this afternoon has disrupted flights over the island and caused havoc at the village feasts. It has also led to the suspension of the Trade Fair. University building €25 million residence and community complex

The University is building a €25 million University Residence & Community Complex on 11,000 square metres similar to university complex all over Europe. The complex will comprise an eight-block student village, offering over 600 beds in different types of accommodation and a number of outlets and facilities situated around a central plaza. Malta Public Transport chairman Felipe Cosmen said the new Euro 6 buses would continue to improve the public transport experience in Malta. Boy had been bruised before he was admitted to Mount Carmel Hospital, court hears

A nurse accused of beating a 10-year-old disabled patient at Mount Carmel Hospital's Youth Residence last September insisted that the bruises were caused by the boy’s violent rocking in his wheelchair. The court heard the accused – Brady Bezzina – and other staff at the Young People’s Unit testify that the boy, who has muscular dystrophy, had attempted to bite and run his wheelchair into them. Over 4,500 migrants rescued as calm seas return to Mediterranean

Ships manned by humanitarian organisations, the Italian navy and coast guard helped rescue about 4,500 boat migrants yesterday as calm seas returned to the Mediterranean, prompting a surge in departures from North Africa. Rescue operations were continuing, an Italian coast guard spokesman said. The corpse of a woman was taken from a large rubber boat, and the migrants were collected from a total of about 40 different vessels, he said. The government is moving ahead with its plans to privatise the Marsa horse racing track, following an expression of interest issued last year. Share index halts four-day positive streak

The Share Index closed in negative territory for the first time this week as it retreated by 0.48 per cent to 4,479.895 points on very low activity.
