On Sunday, several newspapers (including this newspaper’s sister) published an opinion piece by the President of the Republic in which she urged everyone to condemn ‘social violence’. However, when you see what she has in mind, the reasons for refusing to join in just pile up. What President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca means by ‘social violence’ is ‘the use of social communication tools’ to invade people’s privacy and ‘shatter’ (a word she uses again and again) their lives and that of their families. Slovenian football boss Aleksandar Ceferin launched what appeared to be a strong bid for the presidency of UEFA yesterday, claiming to have support from almost one-third of the European soccer body’s member associations. The Slovenian football association, in announcing its president’s intention to stand, listed 18 European FAs out of a total of 55 that it said were prepared to support him. FIFA president Gianni Infantino deserves to be shown a red card on the evidence of his first 100 days in office, campaigners seeking reform of the world soccer body said this week. British parliamentarian Damian Collins, a co-founder of the ‘New FIFA Now’ group, said the Swiss had delivered “smoke and mirrors, but not a great deal of substance” since his election in February. “We already know that FIFA has failed football over the past decades. Lino Bugeja’s piece on the need to read and the right to write (‘Global language of Internet’ - May 23) prompted me to share a few thoughts here on this topic. The first dictionary was published in 1806 by Marion Webster, and ever since the idea of an important principle that words be written in a specific manner was introduced as a rule in our schools.
