ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Hundreds of teachers in Alaska staged a walkout during a school board meeting in protest of school board leadership. The Anchorage Daily News reports the Anchorage educators walked out Monday, the night before contract negotiations were scheduled to resume between the school district and teachers union. Middle school teacher Kadra Peterson says educators have come to board meetings for months with concerns but feel ignored and disrespected. She says they're not supported by leadership. AKRON, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio woman has been sentenced to nearly seven years in federal prison for her role in what authorities say was a $1.8 million college financial aid scheme that involved enrolling inmates and people whose identities had been stolen at an Arizona community college. Fifty-four-year-old Janice Shufford, of Akron, was ordered to pay $1.2 million in restitution during sentencing Tuesday. NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities say a woman who lost control of her car and fatally struck two toddlers in a Brooklyn crosswalk has died of an apparent suicide. Forty-four-year-old Dorothy Bruns was found dead in her Staten Island home Tuesday. Authorities say pills and a note were found nearby. Bruns faced 15 years in jail after being charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, reckless endangerment and assault following the accident in March. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Former Republican U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis was elected Florida governor Tuesday, riding the support of President Donald Trump to victory. DeSantis, 40, was considered an underdog before Trump tweeted his support for DeSantis in December, a month before he got into the race. Trump campaigned to help push DeSantis to a primary victory in August and came to Florida two more times to propel him past Democratic Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum in the final days of the election.
