«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California lawmakers are expected to vote to prohibit new local taxes on soda for the next 12 years. The debate planned for Thursday is the result of a last-minute deal to block a beverage industry-backed ballot measure that would make it much harder for cities and counties to raise taxes of any kind. The makers of soda and other sugary drinks are fighting hard against a growing wave of taxation by local governments and are turning increasingly to state legislatures for relief. Читать дальше...

Small business lessons from Red Hen's Sanders ouster

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — Taking a political stand — like asking a White House press secretary to leave your restaurant — can be polarizing and risky. The Red Hen in Lexington, Virginia, has become internationally famous since ousting Sarah Huckabee Sanders over the weekend. The owner had consulted with employees, who said Sanders made them feel uncomfortable. It was an on-the-spot decision, and led to condemnation by President Donald Trump... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Walgreens gave investors a better-than-expected third quarter, raised its dividend and detailed a big share buyback Thursday. None of this seemed to matter once markets opened. Shares of the nation's largest drugstore chain and its competitors tanked after Amazon.com took another step into their territory by announcing the purchase of PillPack, a relatively new online pharmacy that offers pre-sorted prescription dose packaging and home delivery. Walgreens, which joined the Dow Jones industrial average this week, saw its shares slide 10 percent.

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Matt Costa took five years to make his most recent album, “Santa Rosa Fangs.” That’s how long it took the former skateboarder, who was about to go professional before shattering his leg in a skating accident in 2003, to pull together the intricate songs like “Sharon” and “Real Love,” loosely telling the story of three siblings coming of age in California. Having got his start recording with No Doubt drummer Tom Dumont and touring with Jack Johnson (they also appeared alongside each other on the “Curious George” soundtrack)... Читать дальше...

Surprise: Unions show signs of revival, despite setbacks

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Their membership has been declining for decades. They've been bedeviled by crippling new laws, and by a devastating U.S. Supreme Court decision just this week. The movement notched several high-profile wins this spring, organizing 5,000 teaching assistants and graduate students at Harvard and winning an... Читать дальше...
