A massive fire Tuesday afternoon at Sonoma Pacific Co., a commercial lumber and pallet company, has forced evacuations near the site of the blaze, authorities said. JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A transgender woman is suing the state of Alaska, saying she was denied coverage for medically necessary surgical treatment. The federal lawsuit, filed on behalf of Jennifer Fletcher, says the state health insurance plan excludes coverage for surgical treatment for gender dysphoria. The lawsuit states that because the only people who require medically necessary care to treat gender dysphoria are transgender, denying coverage for such health care discriminates against transgender people. WASHINGTON (AP) — Seeking to revive a $15 billion plan to pare back spending that has languished on Capitol Hill, the White House on Tuesday dropped a proposal to cut $252 million in leftover funding to fight the Ebola virus in Africa. An Ebola outbreak in Congo led the administration to rethink the cuts. The White House budget office has also dropped a plan to cut $107 million appropriated during the Obama administration to help communities rebuild watersheds and floodplains damaged by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. FARGO, N.D. (AP) — An 85-year-old Fargo man accused of shooting and killing his wife during an alleged double suicide pact has been charged with murder. Court documents show that Louis Averson told authorities that he and 85-year-old Ila Averson agreed to kill themselves because of her poor health. He says they attempted carbon monoxide poisoning in their garage Friday night and sat in a vehicle for five hours. He says his wife knew he was going to shoot and then shoot himself. SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City police are looking for leads after a man was allegedly attacked while trying to defend two gay men who were being chased after the Utah Pride Festival. Detective Greg Wilking said Tuesday the two men were leaving the festival around 10:30 p.m. Saturday when a group of young white men approached from an alley and made homophobic slurs.
