Pop Quiz: Former skater Matt Costa aims to capture California sound
Matt Costa took five years to make his most recent album, “Santa Rosa Fangs.” That’s how long it took the former skateboarder, who was about to go professional before shattering his leg in a skating accident in 2003, to pull together the intricate songs like “Sharon” and “Real Love,” loosely telling the story of three siblings coming of age in California.
Having got his start recording with No Doubt drummer Tom Dumont and touring with Jack Johnson (they also appeared alongside each other on the “Curious George” soundtrack), the Huntington Beach native talks about how his wealth of experience helped bring the music to life.
