McDonald’s looks to expand in UK, Ireland with 50 new restaurants in a year

US fast-food giant McDonald’s has announced plans to create 20,000 jobs in Britain and Ireland to help meet an expected boom in post-pandemic demand. McDonald’s said in a statement published on Sunday that it will open 50 restaurants over the next 12 months as COVID restrictions ease. No UEFA action for German ‘keeper Neuer’s rainbow armband at Euro 2020

The German FA has said it will not be punished by UEFA for the rainbow-coloured captain’s armband Germany skipper Manuel Neuer has worn during Euro 2020 in solidarity with gay pride this month. The German Football Association (DFB) said it has received a letter from European football’s governing body stating that a review of the matter has been stopped. “The armband has been assessed as a team symbol for diversity and thus for a ‘good cause'”, the DFB said on Twitter. Scotland’s Gilmour tests positive for coronavirus, misses Croatia clash

Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour tested positive for coronavirus on Monday, dealing a huge blow to Scotland’s hopes of making it beyond the group stages of a major tournament for the first time at Euro 2020. Gilmour picked up the man-of-the-match award in Friday’s 0-0 draw against England at Wembley in his first international start. US star Angelina Jolie visits refugee camp in Burkina Faso

Oscar-winning actor Angelina Jolie on Sunday visited a refugee camp in Burkina Faso sheltering thousands of Malians who have fled jihadist violence in the region. Jolie visited the camp at Goudebou, in the northeast of the landlocked west African country, as part of her role as an ambassador for the UN refugee organisation, the UNHCR. Single COVID-19 case reported on Monday

A single new case of COVID-19 was reported on Monday, the second successive day that just one new infection was recorded. The new case was found after 1,480 swab tests. The health authroities said in their daily bulletin that five patients had recovered, pushing the number of active cases down to 23. A total of 628,735 vaccine jabs have been administered, with 288,195 people now fully vaccinated. A total of 2,891 doses were administered on Sunday.

Volvo, Northvolt team up for electric battery factory

Volvo and Sweden’s Northvolt have joined forces to build a new battery factory in Europe as the carmaker aims to sell only fully electric cars by 2030, the companies said on Monday. Swedish carmaker Volvo and the battery start-up said that, through a joint venture, they will build a gigafactory with a potential capacity of 50 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year, with production expected to start in 2026. Degiorgio brothers' second pardon request turned down by cabinet

Alfred and George Degiorgio have had a request for a presidential pardon rebuffed by Malta’s cabinet of ministers. Police find firearms, explosives in the sea off Miġra l-Ferħa cliffs

Firearms and explosives have been recovered from the seabed off Miġra L-Ferħa cliffs in a police operation which started on Sunday and ended on Monday morning. An army team of divers was also involved in the search on the west coast. Officers from the police major crimes unit were on the scene. The police said a search started after a tip-off at 3pm on Sunday and continued till 7pm before resuming on Monday morning. Finance Minister Clyde Caruana on Monday assured Malta will continue beefing up its anti-money laundering systems. US, French astronauts make ISS spacewalk

Crane topples over in Mosta, worker trapped in St Paul's Bay

A crane toppled over at a building site in Mosta on Monday morning, slightly injuring the operator, eyewitnesses said. The incident happened just after 10am at Triq in-Naġġar.  The crane's arm came to rest on a room across a road, causing slight structural damage. Meanwhile an Italian worker was injured on Monday morning when he was trapped between two trucks. The accident happened during works near the Sirens waterpolo club in St Paul's Bay at 9am. Malta's external transactions surplus turns into deficit

Malta’s external transactions registered a deficit of €42.6 million in the first quarter of this year, compared to surplus of €29.8 million  in the same period last year. The National Statistics Office said the deficit was primarily the result of negative net balances recorded in the goods account (€369.0 million) which was partly offset by a positive net balance of €608.8 million recorded in the services account.
