'Story I wish I never needed to tell' wins Darrin Zammit Lupi major award

Maltese photojournalist Darrin Zammit Lupi has won the prestigious Yannis Behrakis International Photojournalism Award for 2021 with a series of moving images chronicling the life of his daughter, who died in January.  Describing the award for his photo essay as an “impossibly huge honour”, he said it was “deeply moving” and “extremely bitter-sweet”.   Zammit Lupi’s emotional story in pictures titled ‘The first photo I ever took of my daughter, and the last’, was recently published by Reuters. Updated: Carlo Ancelotti named new Real Madrid coach

Carlo Ancelotti will return to Real Madrid as coach for the next three seasons, the Spanish club said Tuesday following last week’s resignation of Zinedine Zidane. The 61-year-old Italian, who won the Champions League for Real Madrid during his first spell at the club between 2013 and 2015, will sign his new deal and be presented to the media on Wednesday, the club said in a statement. Clyde Caruana without ministerial car, Miriam Dalli goes electric

Finance Minister Clyde Caruana does not have a ministerial car, while energy and sustainable development minister Miriam Dalli has an electric car, a series of parliamentary questions showed on Tuesday. Caruana was appointed minister late last year, succeeding Edward Scicluna and is known to frequently drive himself to work and official functions. Rome sparks ridicule with botched dedication to ex president

The city of Rome on Tuesday dedicated a square beside the River Tiber to a late Italian president, but spoilt the inauguration by misspelling one of his first names.  A marble street sign honouring Carlo Azeglio Ciampi was left veiled during an inauguration ceremony even as the misspelled "Azelio" was still visible through a drape of purple and gold, the official colours of the ancient city. UK reports zero daily Covid deaths for the first time since July

Britain on Tuesday reported zero daily deaths from Covid-19 for the first time since  July 30 last year despite a recent rise in cases linked to the Delta variant. According to the latest government figures, 127,782 people in the UK have died within 28 days of a positive test since the start of the pandemic --  the worst death toll in any European country.  The UK has had 4.49 million cases in total. Man jailed 18 months over mini-market hold-up

A man who stole cash and cigarettes in an armed hold-up at a mini-market eight months ago has been jailed for 18 months and ordered to reimburse the shopowner €900. Gabriele Moccia, a 39-year old Italian national,  admitted to having committed the crime at the store in Triq il-Halel, St Paul’s Bay last October 7 at 6.45pm. Timmy Vassallo has secured overall victory at the Ragusa Kinder Cup Regatta. Competing in the Optimist division, the Malta Young Sailors Club sailor was in control of the competition right from the outset as he managed a consistent top-three placing in all nine regattas held in Italy. Morgan revises Plus Four and Plus Six for 2022

Morgan has applied a series of changes to its Plus Four and Plus Six models.  Marking the start of a cyclical update strategy for Morgan vehicles, the updates bring a variety of changes and additions to the pair.  A new hood arrives as one of the most notable changes, which Morgan says is ‘designed to improve usability, weather protection and refinement’. X300 bus service departures moved from Ċirkewwa to Valletta fast ferry terminal

A bus service from Ċirkewwa to the University, the Junior College and Valletta has been shifted to operate from Valletta to service the fast ferries from Gozo, Transport Minister Ian Borg has said in Parliament. He was reacting to media reports that the service, known as Route X300, had been discontinued just a few months after it was introduced with much fanfare. With sutures under the eye, woman forgives partner who allegedly injured her

A man who allegedly injured his partner, was granted bail after the visibly scarred woman on Tuesday expressed her wish to forgive him but not to share her home. The 38-year-old Luqa man pleaded not guilty to grievously injuring his partner, threatening and insulting her beyond the limits of provocation in the incident that allegedly took place on Sunday afternoon. Constitution best route for controversial fines reform, Council of Europe says

Amending the constitution is the best way to introduce a contentious reform that would allow public entities to impose much larger fines, rule of law experts from the Council of Europe have said.   In an urgent opinion, published on Tuesday, the Venice Commission said that the best route to change the way fines are handed out, is through an amendment to the constitution and not to another existing law.  Justice Minister Edward Zammit Lewis wrote to the political body in April, asking its opinion on a pending reform... Watch: Airport arrivals sparse, but happy, as tourist season officially opens

The tourism season officially reopened on Tuesday, but arrivals were sparse.   Scheduled flights had only a fraction of the passengers they normally carry as confidence to travel takes time to build up after COVID-19. Some 1,500 passengers were expected to arrive at Malta International Airport today, according to a spokesperson - an 86% drop on an average pre-COVID day in June 2019.
