The Amazon founder revealed this week that both he and his brother Mark would take a place on board the company's New Shepard launch vehicle on July 20, to fly to the edge of space and back. They will be joined by the winner of Saturday's charity auction, whose identity will be disclosed in coming weeks, and by a fourth... Читать дальше...

The Italian linguist inspired by Maltese smuggling chocolate in the 1980s

Times of Malta

A grammar guide to Maltese for Italians has been published, some 35 years after a linguist who lived near the port in Catania heard people speaking a strange language and, often, asking to buy “ċikkulata” (chocolate). Intrigued, the Italian professor soon learnt that these were Maltese people, speaking their native language, and travelling to Sicily for much sought-after chocolates so they could smuggle them back home for family and friends. Back then, in the early 1980s, former prime minister... Читать дальше...

Times of Malta

Denmark's star player Christian Eriksen collapsed and had to be revived on the field by medics during the Euro 2020 match with Finland on Saturday.  The opening match of Group B was paused amid emotional scenes after Eriksen fell to the turf at the end of the first half. Danish players immediately gestured to the medical staff to attend to Eriksen and his teammates were in tears as the 29-year-old was given CPR. Eriksen was eventually carried off the field at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen after... Читать дальше...

Anxiety among parents as government diabetes project reaches its end

Times of Malta

Growing up, 12-year-old Nick was never able to join a sports team or take an extracurricular activity with friends and his parents regretfully had to say no to summer camps and sleepovers because he has Type 1 diabetes that needs to be constantly monitored and treated. Thanks to a pilot project that started in February, Nick has been making use of a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) which his mother, Patricia, said brought a sense of normality to the family’s life and more freedom to Nick, whose teens are on the horizon... Moscow announces 'non-working week' as virus surges

Times of Malta

Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin on Saturday announced a "non-working" week in the Russian capital, with non-essential workers told to stay home, as Covid-19 cases hit a six-month high. The decision marks a change of tone for Russian authorities, with President Vladimir Putin repeatedly insisting that Russia has handled the pandemic better than most countries.   "During the past week the situation with the spread of the coronavirus infections has sharply deteriorated," Sobyanin said on his website as the city registered 6,701 daily infections... The Genesis G80 is a great value newcomer to the premium car market

Times of Malta

Over the past few decades, the premium segment has proved almost impossible for newcomers to break into, such is the stranglehold Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have on it. Volvo has made a great case for itself, while Lexus has long been a solid left-field alternative. Tesla, too, with its electric vehicles. But many others have tried and failed, which makes Genesis’ attempt interesting. It’s new to Europe, but the spin-off from Hyundai actually launched in 2015 in its home market of South Korea. ‘Training is hard but cycling round Sicily in two days will be harder’

Times of Malta

Ultra-triathlete Fabio Spiteri is planning to become the second person to ever cycle around the Sicilian coast in less than two days in September to raise funds for animal shelters. He will not be stopping – nor sleeping – until he completes the 1,000-kilometre distance on his bicycle. It is not the first time Spiteri, who currently holds the national record of double and triple ironman, has cycled around the neighbouring island for charity. But he now intends to knock off eight hours from the... Читать дальше...

‘Radio’ Mueller, Hummels turn up volume for Germany’s Euro 2020 bid

Times of Malta

After a two-year exile from international football, 2014 World Cup winners Thomas Mueller and Mats Hummels are set to crank up the volume on the pitch for Germany’s bid to win Euro 2020. Germany head into the European Championship low on confidence after a shock home defeat to North Macedonia in March in the wake of an historic 6-0 thrashing by Spain last November, the Germans heaviest defeat in more than 80 years.   Continue reading this article on Sports Desk, the new sports website by Times... Sliema council irked by bikes and scooters on promenade

Times of Malta

The Sliema local council has called for better enforcement on 'low-powered vehicles and bicycles' along the town's promenades.  The council said it had been receiving multiple complaints about people cycling or using pedelecs on promenades and pavements, which is prohibited for all but young children under the town's by-laws. Under national laws, electric scooters are allowed on pavements and footpaths but limited to 10 kilometres per hour. "We continue to insist that these regulations are respected... Читать дальше...

G7 adopts global infrastructure plan in riposte to China

Times of Malta

G7 leaders on Saturday adopted a rival plan to oppose China's Belt and Road Initiative by helping build infrastructure in poorer nations in a "values-driven, high-standard and transparent" partnership. The adoption of the US-inspired "Build Back Better World" (B3W) project came after President Joe Biden and leaders met to address "strategic competition with China and commit to concrete actions to help meet the tremendous infrastructure need in low- and middle-income countries", the White House said. Fans feel abandoned as sports competitions omitted in mass events reopening

Times of Malta

Maltese football fans were left seething after the government and the health authorities have again omitted attendance to sporting events in their latest round of COVID-19 relaxation measures, in what they described as another clear sign of how sport is not important in Malta. On Friday, Health Minister Chris Fearne and Jose Herrera, the Minister for Culture, and Charmaine Gauci, the Superintendent for Health, on Friday announced that seated mass events will resume on July 5 for those who are fully vaccinated... Italy limits AstraZeneca vaccine to over-60s

Times of Malta

Italy said Saturday it would restrict the AstraZeneca vaccine to the over-60s, with younger people who have already received one dose to complete the cycle with an mRNA jab. The change follows an improvement in coronavirus infection rates in Italy, which has been devastated by the pandemic but will next week lift restrictions in much of the country following a sharp decline in cases. The EU's medicine agency in April drew a link between rare blood clots and AstraZeneca jabs but stressed that the benefits of the vaccines outweighed the risks.

Puskas Arena hosts Hungary’s Euro 2020 revival dreams

Times of Malta

Towering over eastern Budapest, Euro 2020 venue the Puskas Arena is both a monument to Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s football fanaticism and a budding revival in once powerful Hungary’s fortunes. Named after Ferenc Puskas, the mercurial lynchpin of Hungary’s fabled ‘Magical Magyars’ team of the 1950s, the 68,000-capacity stadium will host four games at the tournament which begins June 11.    Continue reading this article on Sports Desk, the new sports website by Times of Malta
