Times of Malta

On the 10th anniversary since the passing of sculptor Joseph Casha, Joseph Agius talks to the artist’s youngest daughter Alison Casha, his brother Louis Casha, best friend Paul Haber and art critic Louis Laganà about the legacy he left behind. The work of sculptor Joseph Casha (1939-2011) originates from an admiration for the 20th century art movement of surrealism. Gender-based problems need gender-based solutions

Times of Malta

When, earlier in April this year, Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau famously tweeted about how his budget for 2021 would turn things around for women because they had been hit harder than men by the pandemic, he was met with harsh criticism. Not that, in today’s culture, there’s anything surprising in being muted, challenged or even cancelled. In Trudeau’s case, however, the dispute had more to do with his reference to the “she-cession”, something that seemed to justify the accusations of gender discrimination. Читать дальше...

Music to get lost within

Times of Malta

The recent EP Crescent by Martha Theuma, released by her under the moniker Das Birthday Girl, is an ethereal set of alternative music tracks that link directly to the artist’s lived experiences. Lara Zammit speaks with the singer about her music. Crescent is an even-keeled collection of downtempo and synth enveloped in reserved melody. How would you describe the EP’s sonic qualities across its three tracks (and in Selene particularly)? It’s really important that my songs sound delicate but full. Читать дальше...

Botched hair treatments lead to calls for regulation

Times of Malta

Marica Gauci has often come across clients with missing patches of hair as a result of botched straightening treatments. The experienced hairdresser has dealt with people who have suffered blistering and scalp burns because of a bad bleach job. One client even asked for help after a barber posing as a hairdresser caused irreversible damage to her hair. But there was little Gauci could do because there is no regulation of hairdressers and beauty therapists handling potentially dangerous chemicals and machinery. Читать дальше...

Grech says his letter to FATF was about defending the country

Times of Malta

PN leader Bernard Grech on Sunday defended his decision to write to the Financial Action Task Force as it considers grey-listing Malta, saying he was doing his part in defending the country. Speaking in a PN telephone interview, he said that the fact that Malta's laws and actions against money laundering were being questioned by international bodies such as the FATF was already a huge hit to Malta’s reputation. “The reality of the situation is that the damage to our country is already done. Whether we pass or fail... Читать дальше...

Connectivity and flexibility are vital for small businesses

Times of Malta

In difficult times, small business owners should consider adapting to the changing needs of customers in their niche. Specific target markets are more likely to flourish in times of global economic turmoil. For example, small businesses serving ancillary business components may suffer as companies seek current full-time staff to meet these needs to minimise costs.  While each niche faces its own challenges, small businesses have many things in common. Growing companies need to hire staff, change... Читать дальше...

Bale warns Wales ‘can hurt’ Italy in Rome

Times of Malta

Captain Gareth Bale warned that Wales can pull off an upset and hurt hosts Italy in their final Euro 2020 Group A game in Rome on Sunday. “We have a game plan that we think can hurt them,” said the Real Madrid star. Italy are already through to the last 16, while Wales need a draw to make sure of progressing to the next round and a win would put them through in pole position ahead of the Azzurri. “It’s going to be a big challenge. We have no doubt even if that record wasn’t there,” said Bale of... Читать дальше...

The conservation of a late medieval panel painting at Mdina Cathedral Museum

Times of Malta

The Metropolitan Cathedral museum houses one of the most important collections of late medieval panel paintings in Malta. Unfortunately, during the past centuries, many such panels, scattered in various local churches and rural chapels, were lost due to neglect or vandalism. The old medieval Mdina cathedral was embellished with a remarkable amount of these archaic panels which were venerated on the various altars and in the chapels within this venerable holy edifice. Pride of place is predominantly reserved to the polyptych of St Paul. Читать дальше...

"The Dawn of a New Era," read the jubilant front-page headline of the conservative Resalat daily, welcoming the 62 percent win by Raisi, the head of Iran's judiciary, in Friday's election. An austere and pious figure from the Shiite Muslim clerical establishment, Raisi is seen as close to the 81-year-old supreme leader... Читать дальше...

Economics and the connection with science and philosophy

Times of Malta

L-Ekonomija: F’ilsien ix-Xjenza u l-Filsosofija by John Consigliopublished by Faraxa Writing a book on the scientific and philosophical underpinnings of economics is a difficult task, even if written in the English language, in which most economic terms have been in use for about two and a half centuries. It is even more so if the Maltese language is used for this purpose. Resorting to Maltese dictionaries, even the best ones, does not always solve translation problems, as many economic terms have specific meanings... Читать дальше...
