Tiananmen Square 'Tank Man' photo vanishes from Bing search engine

Times of Malta

Searches for the famous Tiananmen Square "Tank Man" protest photo came up empty on Microsoft search engine Bing on Friday, raising censorship concerns on the anniversary of the deadly crackdown. The award-winning photo from 1989 was not served up in image or video searches using Bing even outside China, a country known for strictly controlling what is available online. "This is due to an accidental human error and we are actively working to resolve this," a Microsoft spokesman said in response to an AFP inquiry prompted by US press reports. Читать дальше...

Corruption: we need to do better

Times of Malta

The Council of Europe’s Group of States against Corruption has found that Malta “implemented satisfactorily or dealt with in a satisfactory manner” four of the nine recommendations on parliament and the judiciary – two of the country’s most important institutions – that it had made six years ago. In a 2019 evaluation, it had also warned that the criminal justice system was at risk of paralysis. Failing to proceed against top officials facing corruption allegations conveyed a feeling that they enjoyed total impunity for their actions... Читать дальше...

Give educators voice they deserve – Gabriel Pullicino

Times of Malta

Education is fundamental to strengthening a democratic society based on sustainability and fair and equitable social development. With this belief at its heart, the GWU thinks that it should begin to contribute to the development of the education sector. Over the past few months, we have had the opportunity to speak to various educators from different sectors. During these meetings, we were repeatedly told that they are often not considered as professionals but sometimes feel they are seen as “glorified babysitters”. Читать дальше...

Fitch maintains Malta's A+ rating and stable outlook

Times of Malta

Rating agency Fitch has reaffirmed Malta’s A+ rating and maintained the country’s outlook at stable, saying it expects the country to resume growing its economy as the pandemic subsides. In a report issued on Friday, the US-based agency said that Malta’s high per capita income levels, large net external creditor position and its pre-pandemic record of strong growth and debt reduction all played in its favour. Counterwise, the country’s large banking sector and the open nature of its economy served as risks... Читать дальше...

The saga of the Attard trees - Alfred Baldacchino

Times of Malta

For the last 70 years, magnificent trees adorned Notary Zarb Street, in Attard. They served the residents and commuters of the street with their aesthetic, ecological, social and economic values. The trees contributed to fresh oxygen and captured carbon dioxide daily; they served as a barrier to the carcinogenic exhaust of the traffic in the street; they shielded the houses from the sun’s rays and also from the strong wind and rain to the extent that shielded rooms were spared the use of electricity to warm and cool houses. Letters to the editor - June 5, 2021

Times of Malta

Praise where praise is due I’m extremely impressed by the Water Services Corporation. A few days ago, I was sent an urgent SMS message from them. It warned me that, from the readings they were getting from my water meter, which is connected to them centrally, there was a great probability that my residence had a water leak. I quickly inspected every nook and cranny in my villa’s rooms to look for a possible water leak. Wonder of wonders, I eventually found out where the leak was. Had I not been made aware of this by the WSC... Читать дальше...
