Sterling goal hands England win over Croatia in Euro opener

Times of Malta

Raheem Sterling ignited England’s Euro 2020 campaign as the Manchester City forward’s clinical finish sealed a 1-0 win against Croatia in their Group D opener on Sunday. Gareth Southgate’s side were struggling to break down Croatia until Sterling struck in the second half at sun-baked Wembley. The 26-year-old’s first goal at a major tournament — in his 13th game — was the perfect riposte to critics who questioned Southgate’s decision to select him instead of Jack Grealish. Sterling has endured... Читать дальше...

One passenger per flight stopped from boarding

Times of Malta

Around one person per flight has been denied boarding an Air Malta flight since travel resumed on June 11, however, Malta’s entry requirements are not deterring tourists from going on their holidays. Currently, quarantine-free entry into Malta is contingent on presenting a vaccine certificate issued in Malta or a negative nasopharyngeal swab PCR test taken 72 hours before arrival. The less-invasive gargle tests (which have proven to be very effective) and vaccination certificates issued abroad are still not being accepted to enter Malta. Читать дальше...

Ruediger ready to get dirty for Germany against world champions France

Times of Malta

Chelsea defender Antonio Ruediger insists Germany need to get a little dirty in their Euro 2020 opener against France on Tuesday in order to subdue the world champions’ forward firepower. France start as clear favourites for the Group F clash at Munich’s Allianz Arena while Germany’s defence faces a stern test having leaked 20 goals in 13 games this season. Fresh from winning the Champions League final with Chelsea, Ruediger insists the Germans can ill afford to allow France’s star forwards like... Читать дальше...

Friluftsliv − embracing the outdoors

Times of Malta

Recently, I put to myself a simple question: Are there any benefits of undertaking physical activity in the outdoors environment as compared to indoors, whatever the latter entails? This chain of thought came about since the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a shift to the outdoors for many who usually undertook their physical activity inside. There was also a plethora of individuals who picked up regular exercise for the first time during this time, and outdoors was the most natural location. My gut instinct told me... Читать дальше...

The proposal, on the slopes of Għajn Tuffieħa, featured a number of people carrying fire flare in front of "Will you marry me?" sign. A video of the proposal was making the rounds on social media on Sunday. An angry Cami Appelgren, a staunch environmentalist and park ranger, immediately took the situation in her own hands and... Stop street litter, and no butts please!

Times of Malta

Street litter includes all the waste materials that are thrown away irresponsibly, especially those thrown away in the streets. The smallest things, such as cigarette butts, up to the largest, like bulky waste materials, form part of such litter. Litter in the streets is continuously increasing due to irresponsible people. This problem is not only found in Malta, but all over the world. In fact, according to the British website Kingdom, 60 per cent of the people in Britain drop litter and only 28 per cent of them admit it. Читать дальше...

Artists in the dark, feel discriminated against in new regulations

Times of Malta

Theatres will continue following their “protocols” come July 5 when mass events resume, but artists say they are still in the dark over what exactly they are permitted to do. The government announced on Friday that seated mass events will resume on July 5 for those who are fully vaccinated. Capacity is capped at 100 people at first, going up gradually to 200 over the course of four weeks. Events can be held both indoors and outdoors but in an enclosed area that allows organisers to control people’s entry and exit. Читать дальше...

UK's sausage row with EU goes from bad to wurst

Times of Malta

UK anger with Europe sizzled on Sunday after a sausage-themed dispute between the British and French leaders over post-Brexit trading arrangements in Northern Ireland. Brussels is equally angered at London's refusal to implement checks on goods heading into Northern Ireland from England, Scotland and Wales. Talks broke down earlier this week, and the European Union is threatening retaliation if Britain unilaterally extends a grace period for trade in chilled meat, including sausages, next month. It happened in June: Paving the way for the French capture of Malta in 1798 (2)

Times of Malta

Who were the spies that aided Bonaparte and were ready to continue furnishing him with a helping hand? Bonaparte obtained very useful information from some French knights who were ready to betray their Order in favour of their country of origin. In his manuscript housed at the National Library of Malta, Bailiff de la Tour du Pin mentions a number of them: Commander Bosredon Ransijat (1743-1812), secretary of the Order’s Treasury; Commander Jean Charles de Fay, director of fortifications and water... Times of Malta

The exhibition From Where I Stand was set up as an exercise to invite the community to engage with their roots, their home, and their relationship with their city, in this case our beloved Valletta. When we are confronted with the same images of our daily surroundings, it is natural to become very familiar with our home and to take it for granted. With the help of Guido Stilon’s photography, made accessible by the Magna Żmien Foundation, through focus groups, 10 people were given the opportunity... Читать дальше...

Authentic and beautiful: A Norman capital in Sicily

Times of Malta

The arrival of the Normans in Sicily brought about a massive transformation in the way the island was administered as well as a very impressive period of building new churches and palaces. The best examples are to be found in the Palermo area. Unfortunately, it is not so well known that when the Normans arrived, they established their capital in Troina and stayed there for 30 years before they moved to Palermo. Troina is an incredibly beautiful city just next to the extraordinary Parco dei Nebrodi. Читать дальше...
