Within weeks, not one will be left in the administration. Mattis will be the last to go, and his abrupt resignation Thursday marks the end of the “contain and control” phase of Trump’s administration — one where generals... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — Michigan lawmakers have rejected drastic cutbacks in legal protections for wetlands and other waterways. The Legislature approved a scaled-back version of a bill that could have left 550,000 acres of wetlands and 4,200 lakes vulnerable to development. The original measure previously cleared the state Senate. But the House passed a version overnight Thursday that keeps existing protections mostly intact. Instead, it rewords the definition of wetlands requiring a permit for the owner to degrade them. Читать дальше...

Privacy and other matters with Facebook's video-call gadget

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — There's a new category of home gadgets best described as screens for making video calls, listening to music and responding to voice commands for tasks you can also do on your phone. Unlike tablets, these microphone- and camera-equipped screens are meant to rest at a fixed location in your living room, kitchen or, gasp, your bedroom. Facebook's Portal is a great option for video calling. But given the company's shoddy record on user privacy, do you even want one? There are also some alternatives... Читать дальше...

Trump moves on immigration dominate 2018 headlines

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Children torn from parents, refugees turned away, tear gas fired on asylum seekers and a relentless stream of changes to immigration regulation and enforcement. To those who champion President Trump and believe cracking down on immigration translates to better lives for Americans, 2018’s breathless headlines were a fulfillment of campaign promises. To many others, they harked back to dark moments in U.S. history. “This is our generation’s sort of existential moment,” said Frank Sharry, head of pro-immigration group America’s Voice.

North Dakota lawmaker wants electric, hybrid vehicles fees

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota lawmaker wants to charge owners of electric and hybrid vehicles an annual fee to help offset lost motor fuel taxes that fund road improvements. Grand Forks Republican Sen. Curt Kreun said drivers of electric and hybrid vehicles should pay their fair share toward road construction and repairs, just as drivers of gasoline-powered cars do. All vehicles contribute to wear and tear on the state's roads, he said. "If you drive on our roads, you got to pay for them," said Kreun... Читать дальше...
