SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah's unemployment rate is up slightly. The Department of Workforce Services reported Friday that the seasonally adjusted jobless rate increased to 3.1 percent in July from 3 percent in June while the state's economy added 57,100 jobs in the prior year. Chief Economist Carrie Mayne says the unemployment rate remains low amid "yet another month of significant growth in the job market." The trade, transportation and utilities sector added the most jobs during the past 12 months, with an increase of 14,100.

A multi-vehicle accident caused a “severe traffic alert” Friday morning in the westbound lanes of Highway 24 east of Broadway in Oakland, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. The left and center lanes were blocked as of 8:45 a.m., with no estimated time to reopen the roadway. GARY, Ind. (AP) — U.S. Steel plans to spend at least $750 million to upgrade a century-old steel mill along northwestern Indiana's Lake Michigan shoreline. Company and government officials said Thursday that the project will help preserve Gary Works' nearly 3,900 steelworker jobs, and could help ensure the 112-year-old mill lasts another century. ST. LOUIS (AP) — A 9-year-old boy has died, days after he was rescued from a downtown St. Louis swimming pool. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that police on Friday confirmed the death of Ed Harris of St. Louis. The child died Wednesday. Firefighters were called to the Hotel Lumiere at the Arch Sunday night. By the time they arrived, hotel staff members were performing CPR on the child, whose family was having a pool party when he went under the water. LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas officials have rejected three more applications for new open-enrollment charter schools, increasing the total number of such applications denied this week to six. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that the state's Charter Authorizing Panel rejected applications Thursday for charter schools in Searcy, Pine Bluff and Hartford. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — More than 100 Indiana University students are living in residence hall lounges after the Bloomington campus experienced a record-setting beginner class. IU spokesman Chuck Carney says 109 students were living in residence hall lounges as of Thursday. He says the housing assignments are temporary and the university hopes to have all those students living in a dorm room by the end of the semester. WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts man has been sentenced to six years in prison for his role in a robbery that left an accomplice dead. The Telegram & Gazette reports 36-year-old Jeffrey Johnson was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to multiple charges including armed robbery and intimidation of a witness. Prosecutors say Johnson, Simon Holley and Shane Bennett robbed Matthew Pye of $2,600 in August 2015. Pye pulled his handgun during the robbery and shot Holley in the hand and Bennett in the back. BERLIN (AP) — Prosecutors have charged a German citizen who allegedly fought for the Taliban in Afghanistan, accusing him of membership in a terrorist organization, attempted murder and weapons offenses. Federal prosecutors said Friday the indictment against 37-year-old Thomas K., whose full name was withheld because of German privacy rules, was filed at a Duesseldorf court. (AP) — A New Jersey man has admitted swindling two investors out of $3.4 million by falsely representing that his businesses had secured lucrative contracts to sell olive oil to major retailers. Federal prosecutors say Antonio Fasolino pleaded guilty Thursday to three counts of wire fraud and a single count of transacting in criminal proceeds. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida's unemployment rate dipped slightly in July. State officials announced Friday the unemployment rate dropped to 3.7 percent last month. That's lower than the national rate of 3.9 percent. The latest estimates say there are about 383,000 unemployed people out of a workforce of more than 10.2 million. National data shows Florida added the second highest amount of jobs in the nation last month. California added 46,700 jobs while Florida picked up 27,400 jobs. MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee man has been indicted on a first-degree murder charge in the shooting of another man nearly 11 years ago.
