China, Southeast Asian navies stage 1st emergency drills amid feud

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SINGAPORE — Chinese and Southeast Asian naval forces staged their first computer-simulated drills so they can jointly respond to emergencies and build trust amid the long-seething disputes in the South China Sea. The two-day exercises that ended Friday involved more than 40 sailors from China and the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations. They worked on search-and-rescue scenarios following a mock ship collision. Singapore’s navy hosted the drills at a training center in Changi naval base... Читать дальше...

10 takeaways from MLB’s trade deadline

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

In the wake of baseball’s non-waiver trade deadline: •What was the point of trading Andrew McCutchen? For the Giants, there wasn’t one. As a likely two-month rental for a contending team, he wasn’t going to yield an influential player or top prospect. And he’s a gem of a person, still capable of great things down the stretch. Giants fans should be glad he’s still around. •Over the winter, Milwaukee scored the two best outfielders on the market: Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich. Читать дальше...

Is JFK's luster fading? Key memorabilia doesn't sell

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

BOSTON (AP) — Is JFK losing his star power? It's probably too early to tell, but 55 years after President John F. Kennedy's assassination, an auction of some of the most iconic items associated with the Kennedy White House fell well short of the pre-sale hype. A rocking chair JFK used to meet with world leaders in the Oval Office sold for $50,000, and a collection of pens he used to establish the Peace Corps and sign a landmark nuclear treaty sold for $60,000 at Friday's auction on Cape Cod, not far from the Kennedy compound in Hyannis... Continuing eruption, quakes in Hawaii raises fears of highway closure

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

HONOLULU — Officials on Hawaii’s Big Island, where the Kilauea volcano has been spewing huge amounts of lava for months, are bracing for the possibility that frequent earthquakes will cut off a major highway. Emergency officials dealing with the eruption are turning their focus to the aptly named village of Volcano, where dozens of small earthquakes shake the ground every hour as Kilauea undergoes dramatic changes. The summit caldera is also collapsing, causing even larger temblors almost daily. Читать дальше...

In his 1st shot at offensive coordinator, Stanford’s Pritchard has all the tools

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

If an apartment building resembled Tavita Pritchard’s baseball cap, it probably would be condemned. The cap needs a run, or maybe two, through a washing machine. That’s probably not a good idea, though. It might fall apart from the stress. “That’s nostalgic for me,” Stanford football’s new offensive coordinator said, looking at his practice headgear. “It’s got the tree on it.” But, wow, is it grungy. “My wife says the same thing,” he said. Pritchard’s offense... Читать дальше...

Shanahan: 49ers have ‘concern’ over RG Garnett’s knee injury; Sherman exits early

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Two days after saying he was “surprised” Joshua Garnett didn’t practice, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided more specifics about the knee injury that’s kept the right guard out of five straight practices. Shanahan said Garnett is seeking a second medical opinion because he still has discomfort in the same knee that required surgery last year. Garnett, a 2016 first-round pick from Stanford, banged his knee with a teammate during the third practice of training camp. “There is concern,” Shanahan said. Читать дальше...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. The story should have explained that Black &Veatch ultimately was required to reimburse the government for only $2,700, which it did.

No definitive motive found in Las Vegas shooting attack

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

LAS VEGAS — In the year before Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock carried out the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history, the high-stakes gambler appeared to have become increasingly unstable, distant and constantly complained of being sick, according to a final investigative report released Friday. Financial records also showed Paddock had lost more than $1.5 million in the two years before the Oct. 1 shooting that left 58 people dead and 869 others injured. One... Читать дальше...
