HONOLULU — Officials on Hawaii’s Big Island, where the Kilauea volcano has been spewing huge amounts of lava for months, are bracing for the possibility that frequent earthquakes will cut off a major highway. FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A North Texas woman has been sentenced to life in prison in the death of her toddler daughter, who was fatally stomped and beaten by her boyfriend. Prosecutors in Fort Worth say 21-year-old Alexis Botello was convicted Friday of capital murder and evidence tampering. Botello was age 17 at the time of the July 2014 death of her daughter, 18-month-old Tylea Moore. The child's body was found buried under a bridge. KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — The Kearney Regional Airport is preparing to unveil its renovation project and to resume flights to Denver International Airport. TRUMANN, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas State Police say a northeast Arkansas police chief was wounded in a shooting in which the chief fatally shot a man. A state police statement says Trumann Police Chief Chad Henson suffered non-life threatening wounds and is hospitalized after the Friday morning shooting that killed Johnny Kelley. ST. LOUIS (AP) — Police have arrested a man a day after he allegedly ran away from a traffic stop, leaving behind a van with 15 people inside. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the driver was arrested Friday as he walked along Highway 109 near Eureka. Police conducting a traffic stop Thursday say the driver jumped out and ran away. Inside the van were 15 people who spoke no English and lacked identification. Missouri Highway Patrol spokesman Juston Wheetley says the driver and the people who were inside the van have been turned over to the U.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — In a story July 31, The Associated Press reported that a federal audit found that Overland Park-based Black & Veatch received $1.31 million in "ineligible" reimbursements from the U.S. government while it was working on an electrical power project in Afghanistan and that the U.S. Agency for International Development found the "vast majority" of the charges to be appropriate. The story should have explained that Black &Veatch ultimately was required to reimburse the government for only $2,700, which it did.

BLOOMFIELD, N.M. (AP) — Authorities say a New Mexico State Police officer accused of trying to give methamphetamine to a woman and marijuana to a 16-year-old girl has resigned ahead of hearing over his employment on the force. A state police spokeswoman says 33-year-old Daniel Capehart resigned Friday in a letter to state police. NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa official has proposed converting a wind turbine blade into a sculpture that would be a new landmark for his community. Bruce Showalter's proposal to use the TPI Composites-made wind turbine blade aims to make Newton more appealing and distinguishable to visitors and passers-by, the Newton Daily News reported. GARDEN CITY, Mich. (AP) — A suburban Detroit man who found himself facing fines after a wild turkey moved into his overgrown backyard has made friends with the large bird. Garden City bans residents from keeping wild animals as pets. The city fined Mark Johnston $100 for harboring the turkey and another $100 for dumping brush at his curb after he cleaned up his backyard in an effort to get the 30-pound turkey to leave.
