CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A retired West Virginia Supreme Court justice is now a convicted felon. Menis Ketchum pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court to a felony count of fraud related to his personal use of a state vehicle and gas fuel card in a scandal that has led to upcoming impeachment trials for the remaining justices. U.S. Attorney Mike Stuart announced Ketchum's agreement to plead guilty soon after the 75-year-old justice retired in July. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minneapolis Police Department says it will hire an advocate for sexual assault victims, following a Star Tribune investigation that revealed pervasive flaws in the handling of rape cases in Minneapolis and other agencies around the state. The Star Tribune reports that an advocate from the Sexual Violence Center will work alongside the department's sex crimes unit and offer victims support, give case updates and expedite access to resources. The advocate will accompany sex assault victims as they make reports to police.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The national retail chain Jo-Ann Fabric wants its customers to sign an online petition and send letters to members of Congress and to the White House urging exemptions from tariffs on hundreds of products the company imports from China. A company official said Thursday that without the exemptions, Jo-Ann customers would "immediately suffer the consequences of these goods being taxed" when the company is forced to raise prices. (AP) — A small-town Michigan police chief has been arrested amid an investigation into his department's use of thousands of pieces of surplus military equipment, including parachutes and mine detectors. Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell said Thursday that Thetford Township police Chief Robert Kenny was charged with embezzlement and obstruction of justice. SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Health officials have confirmed the first death in Utah caused by the West Nile virus this year. The Salt Lake County Health Department said in a Wednesday statement that the deceased individual was over the age of 65 and suffered from other health concerns. The person died last week and was diagnosed with a "more severe" form of the mosquito-borne illness. The person lived in Salt Lake County. Six people died from West Nile last year in Utah. The jury in the financial fraud trial against Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, would have returned guilty verdicts in the 18 charges against him but one juror did not believe there was enough evidence to convict him on all counts, another member of the jury said Wednesday.
