He said U.N. humanitarian officials report that 1.3 million of those who fled suffer malnourishment. Dujarric also said severe shortages of basic medicines and medical... Читать дальше...

Report identifies more than 1,000 victims of priest abuse

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — More than 1,000 children — and possible many more — were molested by hundreds of Roman Catholic priests in six Pennsylvania dioceses, while senior church officials took steps to cover it up, according to a landmark grand jury report released Tuesday. The grand jury said it believes the "real number" of abused children might be "in the thousands" since some records were lost and victims were afraid to come forward. The report said more than 300 clergy committed the abuse over a period of decades. Читать дальше...

‘Conan’ to Cut Music Performances When TBS Show Shifts to Half-Hour Format

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

“Conan” is doing away with musical performances when it switches to a half-hour format next year. As a result, producer and music booker Roey Hershkovitz will be leaving the show. Hershkovitz has been with “Conan” since he started as an intern in 1999, and continued with the show with its move to TBS from NBC in 2010. Although the show will not have consistent musical guests, Hershkovitz may still consult on occasional music episodes or potential music content on TeamCoco.com’s digital platforms. Читать дальше...

U.S. Amateur offers rare chance to stroll around Pebble Beach

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

PEBBLE BEACH — One of the coolest things about this week’s U.S. Amateur is the freedom to walk around Pebble Beach, unencumbered by the customary crowds. This is not the AT&T Pro-Am, in other words. And it’s definitely not the U.S. Open, where galleries jam against the ropes on virtually every hole. Few people typically attend the Amateur, beyond family and friends of the 312 players competing to win the nation’s oldest championship. And the field will be trimmed to 64 by Wednesday morning... His breaths then became deeper and more labored. His chest heaved several times before it went still. Читать дальше...

2 women dead in St. Louis home; hazardous chemical detected

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis officials are investigating whether a hazardous chemical is to blame for the deaths of two sisters. The bodies of the women were discovered Tuesday. Both were in their 50s. Fire Capt. Leon Whitener says preliminary testing indicated the presence of hydrogen cyanide, a hazardous chemical that can develop from burning plastic or mixing household chemicals. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that firefighters who first responded grew dizzy. Whitener says there is no immediate evidence of foul play. Читать дальше...

High court: Interest on some personal loans can be illegal

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In a win for consumers, the California Supreme Court says interest rates on some personal loans may be so high that they are illegal under state law. The court in its decision on Monday did not define exactly what interest rate would qualify as unconscionable. At issue in the case before the state Supreme Court were consumer loans of $2,500 and higher. California does not cap interest rates that lenders can charge on those loans. Writing for a unanimous court, Associate Justice... Читать дальше...

‘The Children Act’ Film Review: Emma Thompson Grapples with Conscience in Sluggish Legal Drama

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

If Emma Thompson can’t make “The Children Act,” a drama about a family-court judge conflicted over her own decisions and the precarious state of her own family, into something interesting and meaningful, then no one can. And she can’t. Screenwriter Ian McEwan, adapting his own novel, and director Richard Eyre (“Notes on a Scandal”) have assembled a fine cast to tackle controversial subjects brimming over with dramatic possibility, but the results are stultifyingly subdued. It’s all so polite, so sober... Читать дальше...

APNewsBreak: California may redo law to treat, free suspects

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Jerry Brown is seeking to tighten a law he signed weeks ago that critics say could have freed rapists and murderers who completed two years of mental health treatment. The proposal obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday specifically bans those charged with murder, rape and other sex crimes from participating and lets judges bar a much broader range of dangerous suspects. It also makes clear that counties must opt in to the program. The law signed by... Читать дальше...

County attorney, accused of making threats, blames politics

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky authorities say they have ended a state contract with a local elected official after determining he threatened to burn down the governor's home and "choke to death" a state employee. But a lawyer for Floyd County Attorney Keith Bartley called the accusations "baseless" and part of an "unprovoked and reckless attack" to punish Bartley for campaigning for Republican Gov. Matt Bevin's Democratic opponent in the 2015 election. The state contracted with Bartley to collect child support payments in Floyd County. Читать дальше...

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — A lawsuit filed against a North Carolina school system and its board of education says an elementary school in need of repairs was discriminated against because of race. The Winston-Salem Journal reports the lawsuit filed against the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and the board of education centers on Ashley Elementary School. «SFGate» (sfgate.com)

LIVINGSTON, Ala. (AP) — At 7:50 a.m. Monday, when classes started at University Charter School, students in kindergarten through eighth grade began a new era, hardly aware of the history they were making. Black students and white students were learning side-by-side in integrated public school classrooms in the west Alabama county. More than half of the school's 300-plus students are black, while just under half are white. While not fully representative of the county's split — 76 percent black, 24 percent white ... They say no one was hurt, even though several of the home's occupants were seated in the area of the house that was hit. ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Film Review: Constance Wu Stands Out in Culturally Rich Rom-Com

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

“All Americans think about is their own happiness,” asserts affluent Chinese mother Eleanor Sung-Young (Michelle Yeoh) in a belittling tone when scrutinized about the overpowering influence family has over her son’s future. Her severe declaration encapsulates the critical ideological duel in director Jon M. Chu’s lavish film “Crazy Rich Asians” (based on Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel), where the pursuit of individual gratification is confronted with the notion of sacrificing one’s desires for the survival of tradition.
